The city of Roanoke will help residents clean up their neighborhoods during its monthlong Spring Clean Roanoke campaign, starting Monday.
Crews will spend a week in each section of the city picking up large, bulky items such as refrigerators, furniture and brush. Normally, residents must schedule such pickups with the city's public works dispatcher.
The items, which must be brought to the curb, will be collected in Southwest April 7-11; in Northwest April 14-18; in Northeast April 21-25; and in Southeast April 28-May 2.
Bulk items and brush should be separated. Building materials, concrete, tires, logs, tree stumps and hazardous waste will not be accepted. Truckloads of material can be dropped off at the Tinker Creek Transfer Station, 1020 Hollins Road.
On Saturday, the Clean Valley Council will hold Clean Valley Day. Individuals, families, churches, civic groups and neighborhoods will volunteer to pick up trash. Last year, more than 1,000 people volunteered.
Trash bags, latex gloves and souvenirs will be provided.
The Roanoke Valley Resource Authority encourages city and Roanoke County residents to get rid of old tires during Tire Amnesty Days, April 11-12. Tires can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lots of the Roanoke Civic Center, Crossroads Mall, Towers Mall, Tanglewood Mall and Vinton Public Works at 804 S. Third St.
Residents are encouraged to gather discarded tires from their neighborhoods and drop them off at one of the sites. Each person may drop off up to 25 tires.
The state will pay all disposal costs, waiving the usual fee of $7 to $10 per tire.
