Danny Payne scored two goals and Tommy Hagan added another as the Roanoke Star Under-13 Boys White Team defeated Herndon International 3-0 to claim the championship of the Chantilly Invitational March 23 in Washington, D.C.
The Star White was 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring opponents 13-2. Team members are: Mike Bachmann, Andy Bauman, Bradley Cobbs, Trey Jamison, David Johnson, Jonathan Katz, Evan Saleeby, Nic Schmitt, Clark Turner, Matt Wallace, Erich Weissbart, Andreas Wokutch, Hagan and Payne.
Paul Nye won five matches, including two against other divisional sparring winners, en route to earning the title of men's grand champion at the Universal Kempo-Karate Spring Tournament in Botetourt County on March 15.
Blake Amos won the youth division, Phillip Martin was the junior champion, and Aimee Harper won the girls' competition. All were gold medal divisional winners.
Other gold medal winners were: Caleb Manspile, Nathan Graves, Brice Amos, Mitchell Tan, Eric Lane, Nadia Karkenny, Frank Gonzales, Kevin Roberts, Dean Martin and Margaret Nye.
Six members of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics qualified for regional competition with strong performances at the Virginia State Championships March 23 in Chesapeake.
Lauren Sisler, who placed second on the balance beam, qualified for regional competition at Level 10, the highest level of competition in the USA Gymnastics age group program.
At Level 9, Peggy Daffron, Julie Rhinesmith, Renee Booker, Christine Diffell and Amanda Heptinstall joined earlier qualifiers April Henry and Elizabeth Jetton. Daffron was third on the uneven bars at the state meet.
The Cave Spring boys 12-under AAU basketball team qualified for state competition by going 4-1 at the Western Regional Tournament March 14-16 in Roanoke. The team will travel to Lynchburg April 18-20 for the Virginia State AAU Tournament.
Cave Spring team members are: Brad Bowers, Daniel Fawley, Matthew Hamilton, Ben Moore, Andy Myers, Matt Nichols, Michael Russo, Lee Thomas and Adam Trumbower.
The Roanoke Jaguars 11-under AAU team defeated the Blue Ridge Wildcats 50-17 to win the championship of the Virginia Association Western Regional basketball tournament held March 20-23 in Roanoke. The Jaguars went undefeated in the four-day tournament.
