UVA'S JONES PARES STAFF

Virginia men's basketball coach Jeff Jones has made a move on his coaching bench.

Jones confirmed in a statement from the school Thursday that he requested to athletic director Terry Holland that longtime UVa assistant coach Tom Perrin be reassigned within the athletic department.

Perrin has been a member of the UVa staff for 15 years. This past season was his third as a full-time assistant.

In his first 12 seasons at Virginia, Perrin served as a graduate asssistant, a part-time assistant and restricted earnings coach.

Jones, who indicated he has no immediate plans to begin the process of determining a replacement for Perrin, issued the following statement:

``As this season ended, I began my evaluation process. Despite many positive accomplishments, I determined changes needed to be made in the basketball program.

``Among the changes were a restructuring of the staff, including changes in division of responsibilities as well as personnel.''

Jones met with Perrin last week and informed him of his decision.

``While this decision was extremely difficult for me, I believe it to be the right one for our program at this time,'' said Jones in the statement. ``My proposal that [Perrin] be reassigned has been approved, but Tom and Terry Holland need to discuss this further.''

Fackler sets triples mark

Lynchburg's Kelly Fackler (Fieldale-Collinsville) set the NCAA Division III career triples record with her sixth three-bagger of the season as Lynchburg split a non-conference doubleheader with Ferrum, winning game one 9-3 and losing the nightcap 14-13.

Fackler, a senior, now has 36 career triples, passing Melissa Ivlow, who hit 35 triples for Aurora (Ill.) College from 1988-1991.

Ferrum (10-16) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the second game. Freshman Tracy Cummings (Alleghany), who was 3-for-5, singled in the winning run. Kelly Jarrell, who had three RBI, singled in the tying run. The rally started when pinch-hitter Kim Harlow, who had sat out the entire day with a sore shoulder, hit double to pull the Panthers to a run.

Cummings, Andrea Vita and Angela Stover had two hits in the first game.

Freshman center fielder Michael Potter singled in Dave Gotauco with the go-ahead run, and the Highlanders added two more runs to take a 5-2 lead into the eighth.

Radford pitcher Tim Manwiller pitched the ninth for his third save. Freshman Mike Zimmerman (1-0) pitched 32/3 innings of three-hit relief to pick up his first victory.

Virginia Tech: West Virginia's Josh Williamson scored on a Virginia Tech throwing error with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Mountaineers a 3-2 win at Hawley Field in Morgantown, W.Va.
