CHAPMAN, Garrett Levi, five months, of Radford, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 2, 1997, in the Community Hospital of Roanoke. He was a beautiful, happy, and perfect baby in every way. He was a joy to his parents and everyone fortunate enough to know him. CONNER, Ada Wood Scales, 100, of Woolwine, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, in a Bluefield hospital. Born April 12, 1896 in Woolwine, she was a daughter of the late Judy Virginia Anne Rakes and Stephen Green Wood. She was a retired educator, and a member of the Sycamore Baptist Church in Stuart for over 70 years. She had been in Bluefield for the last three years as a resident of Westwood Health Care Center. Educated in Patrick County, she attended Ferrum College and later taught school in Patrick County. She served on the Patrick County School Services Board and the Patrick County School Board. During her tenure, one and two room schools were closed and a consolidated high school was built. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star, and had been a member for over 50 years. Until recent years, she was active in community affairs. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dixie N. Scales, and her second husband, Daniel C. Conner; and a daughter, Doris S. Shelor; and eleven brothers and sisters. Surviving are a daughter, Avoy S. Glover of Kenbridge; a son, Roy L. Scales and his wife, Phyllis, of Bluefield, Va.; stepdaughter, Lowell C. Williams of Stuart; foster sons, Alfred Brammer and his wife, Patricia, of Woolwine, and Falus Hatcher of High Point, N.C.; son-in-law, George Shelor of Floyd; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and foster grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, April 5, 1997, at 11 a.m. from the Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton with the Rev. Gerald Melton officiating. EDWARDS, Judy Martha, 56, of Roanoke County, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 1997 in her home. She was a graduate of William Fleming High School, attended Virginia Western Community College, and was a honor graduate of Roanoke College. She was the manager of the Ronald McDonald House, and was committed to serve the families of sick and injured children and adults in their time of need. She was a member of the A.B.W.A., Hollins Charter Chapter, a member of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, and the P. Buckley Moss Society. Judy was the beloved mother of Dr. Matthew S. Edwards of Winston-Salem, N.C., William Stuart Edwards, Amy E. Edwards, Terri E. Anderson, all of Roanoke, and Kelly E. Jones, Goodview. She was the beloved daughter of Lucille J. Edwards of Salem, and beloved sister of Peggy E. Clark, Phyllis J. Moon, both of Roanoke, Betty S. Beckwith, Montvale and Donna J. Slaughter, Midlothian; also surviving is a special friend, Robert Pugh of North Carolina; several nieces, nephews and cousins; an aunt, Isabelle Beckner, Roanoke. FELTS, Vera Morris, 82, of Galax, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997 in Waddell Nursing Home. Mrs. Felts was born in Surry County, N.C. July 17,1 914 to Winfred Morris and Fannie Galyean Morris. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, B. Ray Felts; a son, Ted Ray Felts; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Lundy Felts. She is survived one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Joe Meade, Falls Church; one son, Randy Felts, Abingdon; one sister, Josephine Cocke, Galax; two grandchildren, Ray Felts and Courtney Felts, both of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. HINKLE, Tula Martha Phillips Quesenberry, 93, of McGill Village, Pulaski, and formerly of Dugspur, died early Thursday morning, April 3, 1997, in the Pulaski Health Care Center. She was born in Floyd County on January 1, 1904, and was the daughter of the late Braxton Phillips and Mary Elizabeth Quesenberry Phillips. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Freddie Quesenberry and Stacy Hinkle; and also by two daughters, Mary Lou DeLaura and Virginia Dalton. Surviving are two daughters, Ethelene Quesenberry, Pulaski, Pauline Q. Seigo, Bristol, Tenn.; three sons, Paul Hinkle, Las Vegas, Nev., Fred Hinkle, Roanoke, William (Bill) Hinkle, Dublin; two brothers, Roosevelt Phillips, Vinton, Nottie Phillips, Willis; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. HOLDREN, Louise Simmons, 88, of Vinton & Chamblissburg, passed away Thursday, April 3, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. J. (Ham) Holdren. She was a beautiful Christian and loved by all who knew her. Mrs. Holdren was a Charter Member of Chamblissburg Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for many years. She was in the first graduating class of Jefferson High School. Surviving are a son, William E. (Bill) Holdren, a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Carl Cross all of Roanoke; a granddaughter and husband, Beckey and Jim Ball of Marietta, Ga.; four grandsons and wives, Stan and Charlotte Cross of Roanoke; Dr. Steve and Ellen Cross of Richmond; Doug and Mary Beth Cross of Winston Salem, N.C. and William E. Jr. (Chip) and Diane Holdren of Roanoke; three great-granddaughters, Ashlyn, Betsy, and Jenny Cross, seven great-grandsons, Sam, Chad, Harry, Mack, and Carl Cross, Tyler Ball and Trevor Holdren, one sister, Genevra Crotts of Roanoke; one brother, Willis Simmons of St. Petersburg, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews. METZ, Lucy Jane, 102, of Rocky Mount, formerly of Roanoke and Dayton, Ohio, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, in Franklin Health Care Center. She was born in Franklin County on September 2, 1894, the second daughter of Thomas I. Metz and Mary Bishop Metz, and was preceded in death by her three sisters, Annie Mae LaPrade, Julia Brown, and Ella Perdue; and brother, Samuel Metz. Miss Metz was a member of the First Baptist Church, Roanoke. Surviving are nieces and nephews, Doris Brown Shea of Union Hall and Naples, Fla., Dora Goad Brown of Rocky Mount, Hilda Perdue Anderson of Roanoke, Carl and Iris Perdue of Moneta, Nancy Perdue of Richmond, and Johnnie and Mary Ann Metz of Glade Hill. MILLARD, Beecher K. Sr., 78, of Vinton, passed away Thursday, April 3, 1997. He served in the CC Camp for three years and was a Nava l veteran having served on the USS Dixie. He retired from Orkin Exterminators in 1979 with 30 years service. He then owned and operated B&M Exterminators for 17 years. He was preceded in death by his wives, Marie L. Born February 10, 1931 in Glen Lyn, Va., he was the son of the late Fred and Audessa White Thompson. Mr. Thompson was self-employed as an auto body repairman, and was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. THOMPSON, Randall Vernon, 58, of Christiansburg, died early Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Lewis Weaver, with full military honors. WATKINS, Edith Hill, 64, of Natural Bridge Station, died Thursday, April 3, 1997 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. Mrs. Watkins was born in Rockb ridge Co., on December 1, 1933, and was a daughter of the late James Hill and Sula Worth Hill. She was a member of the Natural Bridge Christian Fellowship. Mrs. Watkins is survived by three sons, Gary Lee Watkins, Buena Vista, Ronald E. Watkins, Vinton, Donald R. Watkins; one daughter, Sandra K. Dameron, both of Natural Bridge ; six sisters, Gladys H. Moore, Hazel H. Floyd, both of Glasgow, Lizzie H. McDaniel, Christine H. Clark, both of Roanoke, Doris H. Fitzgerald, Linda H. Plogger, both of Glasgow; two brothers, Roy Hill, Roanoke, Wayne Hill, Lexington; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 1997, at the Natural Bridge Christian Fellowship, with the Rev. Barry Nall officiating, with burial to follow in the Glasgow Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.
WILLIAMS, Gladys Vivian Kerr, 92, of Salem, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997. She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Mildred Kerr of Giles County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Clinton Eugene Williams. They were former residents of Giles County. Gladys was a faithful Christian and a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and George A. Williams. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Gary N. and wife, Kathy Williams of Salem, Jim F. and wife, Andrea Williams of Williamsburg, Michael D. Williams of Orlando, Fla., and Delana W. and husband, Randy Owens, Nashville, Tenn. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Amy N. Williams, Salem, Rayce C. and Kelsey L. Williams of Williamsburg; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem, Saturday, April 5, 1997, at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ellis Meredith officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memory Gardens, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends Friday, April 4, 1997, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
