If you don't already have too many plans for your Saturday, you can still take part in a unique learning experience. Loose and comfortable clothing will be fine, because you'll be involved in some physical activity as well as learning about a special kind of ministry.
Abundant Life Fellowship, 4491 Old Pike Road in Pilot, is playing host to a "Davidic Praise Workshop" today, which will explore movement and dance as forms of worship. Led by guest instructor Linda Quickle from Monrovia, Md., session participants will learn some basic movements of praise which can lead them to experience worship at a higher level of spiritual freedom.
Worship is what is stressed in these workshops and not just the dance and movement. "Never should the dance distract - it should always edify the Lord," Quickle said. The teachings are based on Biblical worship principles. The term "Davidic" comes from a reference in II Samuel 6:14, where King David danced as he brought the holy ark of God into the city of Jerusalem.
Quickle, who has a background in classical ballet and modern dance, has been a member of Jerusalem Worship Dance Ministries for nine years. The ministries group consists of five to eight ministers of dance from different backgrounds and different areas of the country. As a team they combine their teaching and dancing experience in workshops nationally and internationally.
The workshop is open to anyone wishing to add to his or her worship life. Men and women of all ages will be welcomed at any or all of the three sessions offered today: Session Two, 9-11:30 a.m., Session Three, 1-4 p.m. or Session Four, 7-9 p.m. The cost is $7. Bring a lunch to eat at the church. |--| Canterbury House, a frame structure belonging to Christ Episcopal Church, Church and Jackson streets, Blacksburg, will be renovated and enlarged as the result of expanded ministry to Virginia Tech students. The vestry board of the church recently voted unanimously to support the project which is estimated to cost about $75,000. The building program will be part of a $100,000 financial drive the parish expects to undertake later this year. The house adjacent to the church currently includes living space for several students and a meeting area. |--| The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley, 1301 Gladewood Road, Blacksburg, will offer two services each Sunday in April and May.
