`THE BUS DRIVER DID EVERYTHING RIGHT' HEAD-ON COLLISION WITH SCHOOL BUS KILLS WOMAN, INJURES ONE STUDENT

Linette Schug may have been speeding through the curve where her car crossed the path of the bus.

A Blacksburg woman was killed and one Blacksburg Middle School student riding home on a school bus was injured in a head-on collision in Montgomery County Friday afternoon.

Linette Schug, 59, died about 2:50 p.m. when her car rounded a curve on Bishop Road, about three-tenths of a mile south of Indian Meadow Road, and struck a school bus, driven by Anthony Dean, 23, of Christiansburg, head-on, Virginia State Police Trooper J.S. Hyre said.

Schug died at the scene. Dean was not injured. One student, who was not identified, was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital and later released, Hyre said.

Schug may have been speeding as she came through the curve into a straightaway where her car crossed into the path of the school bus, the trooper said. Dean saw her and braked before sending the bus into a ditch in an attempt to avoid Schug's car. There was no indication Schug saw the bus before the collision, Hyre said.

"The bus driver did everything right," Hyre said.

Hyre estimated there were about 12 students on the bus who got out through the emergency exit with the help of Dean. The bus probably sustained about $20,000 in damage, he said.

County bus routes will not be affected by the accident, a school transportation official said.
