Coca-Cola's Olympic strategy revealed

RADFORD - A behind-the-scenes account of Coca-Cola's Olympic marketing program will be given by John Martin Jr. on April 18. Martin is the senior director of marketing for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated. He works closely with the parent company, Coca-Cola USA, in developing special marketing programs, such as the 1996 Olympics.

Martin, the executive-in-residence at Radford University this year, will speak at a special breakfast held at Muse Banquet Hall at 7:30 a.m., April 18. Cost of the breakfast is $10.

Martin also will speak at a noon luncheon April 17 at Hotel Roanoke. Cost of the luncheon is $15.

Microsoft donates software to Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG - Microsoft Research, a division of Microsoft Corp., has donated $107,820 in software to Virginia Tech for the National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations Project.

With sponsorship from the federal government, the university is designing a system that will allow graduate students' theses and dissertations to be available on the Internet. The final system will be shared with universities nationwide and will allow the results of 400,000 new research projects each year to be accessible worldwide.

Microsoft is donating 200 licenses of "SGML Author," a software package that converts documents to the special language used on the Internet.

Virginia Tech has been working with the Southeastern Universities Research Association and the Southeastern Library Network since 1993 to create a regional electronic library. The project has been aided by donation of a $250,000 computer system from IBM and software from Adobe System.

Draper Aden hires Virginia Tech graduate

RICHMOND - Draper Aden Associates, with offices in Blacksburg, Richmond and Nashville, Tenn., has hired William C. Kreye as senior project manager in its Richmond office.

Kreye has more than 25 years of experience in industrial, municipal water, wastewater, groundwater remediation, solid waste management and systems design. He is a registered professional engineer in 11 states and the District of Columbia. He earned his undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees from Virginia Tech and was assistant professor of civil engineering in Tech's Environmental Engineering group for four years.

Realtors present top sales awards

The New River Valley Association of Realtors has honored the top sales producers of 1996 at a special banquet. The highest awards go to Realtors who made $4 million or more in sales in 1996. These winners were Joyce Alderman, Joseph Ardito, Louise Baker, William Bondurant, Janie Cassell, Evelyn Clark, Pat Collins, Wayne Elliot, Judy Fithian, Joseph Jones, Thomas Kyle, W.H. Maddy, Jr., Priscilla Morris, Vicki Powell, John Skelton and Kay Stratton.

Insurance man earns special designation

RADFORD - Tony Mullins, senior associate of Mutual of New York, has earned the Chartered Life Underwriter professional designation from The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Mullins completed a 10-course curriculum and 20 hours of supervised examinations. He entered the insurance industry in 1989 after a 20-year teaching career and has received many awards since then. He specializes in working with young families, self-employed individuals and small business owners.

Better brochure workshop offered

RADFORD - Radford University's Business Assistance Center is holding a workshop on how to create effective brochures Wednesday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The workshop, which costs $49, will be held at the Business Assistance Center, 600H Norwood St.

Floyd bank to hold appreciation days

Construction of a new drive-in facility and a vault for safety deposit boxes is completed at the Blue Ridge Bank in Floyd. To thank customers for their patience during construction at the bank, discounted safety deposit banks, special CDs and free checks are being offered through April 12.
