AKERS, Blanche Myers, 90, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, April 5, 1997, at her home. She was a longtime member of Park United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Leonard Akers; two brothers, John B. Myers Sr. and Robert O. Myers, and two sisters, Lillie M. Reed and Elizabeth M. Chandler. Surviving are her children, Freddie Lee Akers and wife, Martha of Roanoke, Leonard (``Jack"") Akers and wife, Louise, Harold David Akers and Janice A. Jones, all of Christiansburg; grandchildren, Cindy Porterfield, Barry Akers, Martha Lynn Akers, Lori Harris, Laura Ellen Via and David Akers; great-grandchildren, Carrie Porterfield, Katie Porterfield, Kayleigh Thornhill and Tanner Austin Akers; several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Loraine Cole and Reba Hamblin, and many close friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Park United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Kelley and the Rev. Mark Christian, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Christiansburg Rescue Squad or to Park United Methodist Church. AKERS, Emily Thompson, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, April 5, 1997. She was retired from Roanoke City Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Akers. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann Akers and Les Brown of Roanoke; sons and daughters-in -law, Claude F. and Alaine Akers of Vinton, James Curtis Akers of Salem, and Richard T. and Patty Akers of Ohio; a sister, Ruth Fralin of Roanoke; 17 grandchildren, including Earnest and Vickey Brown, and Ronald E. and Lisa Brown. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. David R. Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the funeral home. BARNES, Colonel Roger A., USA (RET), 80, of Roanoke, died Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 1997. A native of Iowa, Colonel Barnes enlisted in the 133d Inf. Regt. Iowa National Guard while a student at Parsons College. After two years, he was discharged so that he could enlist in the 3d F.A.U.S. Army. He won a Senatorial appointment to West Point from which he graduated in 1942, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was ready to go aboard a transport for Okinawa as the Operations Officer of a Combat Engineer Battalion for the Invasion of Japan when the Japanese surrendered. Shortly thereafter, he was assigned as the CO, 220th Armored Engineer Bn. and Division Engineer, 20th Armored Division. In 1947, he received an MS in CE from the State University of Iowa. Assigned to Japan, he spent three years in HQ. Eighth Army and went to Korea to command the 84th Engr. Construction Bn., building highway and railroad bridges from the Pusan Perimeter up to Pyongyang, N. Korea when the Chinese drove our troops out of N. Korea. He returned to the U. S. in 1951 to organize the Army ROTC at Bucknell Univ. He was then off to Germany as Assistant Commandant (Academic Dean) U. S. Army, Europe Engineer School. Again he became Bn. CO and Division Engineer, 2d Armored Division. Returning the to the US in 1957, he was assigned as Deputy District Engineer, Baltimore, engaged in building dams in the Susquehanna River Basin. A tour in the Pentagon followed as Chief Air Defense Branch, Construction Division, DCSLOG responsible for programming for ground facilities for Army Missile Sights worldwide including those in Florida during the Cuba crisis and the Prototype of the radar later used in the Persian Gulf to direct the Patriot Missiles. He t hen went to Alaska as Engineer, US Army, Alaska just in time for the Great Alaskan Earthquake and two winter Sub-artic maneuvers. His last army assignment was in Chicago as Deputy Division Engineer. This office was responsible for all dredging and dams on the Upper Mississippi River Basin and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River contingent to the U.S. One of the most interesting projects was diverting the Niagara River so that we could stabilize the crest of the American Falls which was retreating to the West. After retirement in 1969 he came to Roanoke College as Director of Physical Plant, Purchasing Officer and Instructor of Military History. He again retired in 1982 and after two years went to work as Civil Engineer and Military Consultant with R. & K. Engineers, a company preparing facilities computer programs for the Army to be used worldwide. He then spent time acting as ROTC Chairman, Roanoke Chapter, The Military Order of the World Wars, in support of seven Senior ROTC and 15 Junior units in Southwest Virginia. He also served on Senator Charles Robb's West Point Selection Committee. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Moorhead Barnes; a daughter, Leslie Barnes Hagan; and a grandson, Richard Andrew Hagan, both of Alexandria. Funeral services with military honors will be conducted from the Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1997. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 9 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

BOWYER, Fin David, Jr., 62, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, April 5, 1997. Funeral 3 p.m. Tuesday at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford.

BROOKS, Burnette Smith, 80, of 325 Patterson Avenue, Rocky Mou nt, wife of Melvin Brooks, died Friday, April 4, 1997, at her home. Born in Rocky Mount on July 27, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Lee Burrell Smith and Nannie Lumsden Smith. She was a lifelong resident of Rocky Mount and a member of First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount. She was a self-employed beautician and a member of the Beautician's Club of Roanoke. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Miss Joyce Brooks of Rocky Mount and Mrs. Karen B. Struder of Richmond; a sister, Mrs. Alice S. Jones of Rocky Mount; a brother, Richard A. Smith of Rocky Mount; one grandchild; a son-in-law, John R. Struder, and a brother-in-law, Thomas Jones. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at First Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, with Rev. Anderson and the Rev. McKinley V. Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in Byrd View Cemetery, Rocky Mount. The family will receive friends at the home, 325 Patterson Avenue, Rocky Mount, and there will be no visitation at the funeral home. BROWN, Jan, 48, of Blacksburg, died Fri day, April 4, 1997 at her home. She was born in Kansas City, MO on October 24, 1948 to the late Earl and Thelma Marcy Hartman. She is survived by her husband, Greg N. Brown of Blacksburg; a daughter, Kimberly Brown of Blacksburg; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Hulio Huamani of Wheatland, Md., Julie Gardner of Minneapolis, Minn., and Deborah and Lance Walbeck of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; a son, Kevin Brown of Blacksburg; and five stepgrandchildren. Jan was very active in the Montgomery County Christmas Store and a member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, April 8, 1997 at 10 a.m. in the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gary Schroeder officiating. BURKHOLDER, Warren Lamberth, 73, of Bedford, passed away Friday, Aril 4, 1997 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He w as born October 23, 1923 in Campbell County, a son of the late Robert Sidney Burkholder and Mary St.Clair Burkholder Via. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Della Whorley Burkholder. He was a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation and was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his present wife, Florence Smith Burkholder; four stepdaughters, Lois Chittum, Vinton, Judy Manley, Doris Stanley, both of Bedford, Carolyn Minnick, Blue Ridge; two stepsons, Roger Clark, Glenn Clark, Thaxton; a niece, Crystal Penny Stevens, Bedford; a sister, Catherine Dillard, Roanoke; 22 stepgrandchildren; and 20 stepgreat-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, April 7, 1997 at 11 a.m. from the Suck Springs Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Howard Talley, the Rev. Richard Dooley and the Rev. Jeffrey Clemens. BUSH, Myrtle Lee, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, April 4, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. J. Bush, and two sons, Earl A. Bush and Billy R. Bush. Mrs. Bush was a longtime member of Grace and Truth Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Lewis L. (``Pete"") Bush of Roanoke and Gerald W. Bush of Waynesboro; two sisters, Virginia Sweeney of Roanoke and Gladys Patterson of Roanoke; a brother, C. E. Bane of Hardy; nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Monday, April 7, 1997, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Fryer officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. BUSIC, Georgia I., 89, of Honaker, passed away Friday evening, April 4, 1997, in a Lebanon hospital. Born on December 18, 1907, in Indiahoma, Okla., she was a daughter of the late George W. and Annie Ryder Ison. She was a graduate of Shumaker High School in Gate City, attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol and received her Bachelor's Degree from Radford State Teachers College in Radford. She had resided in Honaker since 1940 and had taught at Honaker High School from 1948 until her retirement. After her retirement, she did substitute teaching for several years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Honaker, where she taught Sunday school for several years. She also was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 140 of Honaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. N. Busic Sr. in 1975, and one brother, Silas L. Ison. Survivors include three sons, Eddie Busic of Richmond, Eldridge Busic of Vansant and Len Busic of Alexandria; two sisters, Audrey Maddux of Gate City and Clare Bledsoe of Weber City; one brother, Edward Ison of Knoxville, Tenn., and four grandchildren, Todd Busic, Tom Busic, April Busic Jarrells and Tyler Busic. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Harold Van Hook officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill. BUSSE, Irene Granger, 79, of Roanoke, died Saturday, April 5, 1997. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Robert F. Busse, Sr.; her son, Robert F. Busse, Jr., Roanoke; her daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and George Christiansen, Long Island, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Robin Harper and husband, Randy, Debra Flannagan and husband, Bruce, Robert F. CLARK, Linda Sue, (``Baby Sue"") 40, of Roanoke, passed away in a local hospital on Saturday, April 5, 1997. She is survived by her husband, Calvin W. Clark; one daughter, Marie Smith; one son, Derrick Smith; three grandchildren; parents, Mr. & Mrs. Otis (Hallie) Smith, all of Roanoke; five sisters, Phyllis Flint, Landover, Md., Joyce Ann Calloway, Letitia Harbor, Nadine Teresa Smith and Darlene Smith, all of Roanoke; and a host of other relatives and many friends. CORVIN, Lonnie P., 93, of Rt. 5, Wytheville, died F riday, April 4, 1997 in Evansham Manor. He was the son of the late Posey and Ida Eversole Corvin and was a member of the Galilee Christian Church. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for 65 years and was preceded in death by his first wife in 1937 and two daughters in 1985 and 1986, and three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ella Spraker Corvin of Wytheville; one daughter, Doris Prizznick, Bakersfield, Calif.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Preston and Nancy Corvin, Marion, Cecil and Becky Corvin, Ellabell, Ga., Eddie and Lynne Corvin, Missouri City, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Peterson, with interment in the Galilee Christian Church Cemetery. DOLINGER, Joseph Lee, 82, of Whitetop, passed away Friday, April 4, 1997. Funeral services Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Whitetop Baptist Church. DUNCAN, C. Hugh, 85, of Blacksburg, passed into Spirit on Saturday, April 5, 1997, at Cozy Home Haven, Fairlawn, where he had resided since moving from his Blacksburg home. Mr. Duncan was born December 18, 1911, near Fincastle. He was the son of the late Adam White Duncan and Margaret Dillon Duncan. He was preceded into Spirit by wives, Emily Camper Duncan and Willie Dickerson Duncan; daughter, Elaine Duncan Fuqua, and grandson, Brian Thomas Fuqua. Mr. Duncan retired from Virginia Tech in 1976 after 41 years of service. He was liaison officer for research stations statewide for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He also served as Assistant to the Director of the Agriculture Experiment Station, and as Assistant to the Dean of Research Division. Upon his retirement, Mr. Duncan was awarded Emeritus status by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors in recognition of his long and distinguished service. All three of his children graduated from Virginia Tech. Mr. Duncan had been a resident of Blacksburg since 1934. He was very active in the community, serving several terms on Blacksburg Town Council. He was a Deacon of Blacksburg Baptist Church for many years, and was instrumental in the church building program, overseeing the construction of the church's last addition. He was the last surviving charter member of Blacksburg Kiwanis Club, where he served as President and Vice President; he also served as Secretary-Treasurer for more than 24 years. He celebrated his 50th year as a member in 1996. Mr. Duncan had a great love of horses and was a partner in the former Blacksburg Riding Stable Inc. He is survived by a daughter, Rosemary Duncan Collins of Pulaski, and a son, Stephen Hugh Duncan and wife, Stel of Blacksburg. Also surviving are three grandsons, Michael Collins and wife, Andrea of Mocksville, N.C., Brent Collins of Advance, N.C., and Adam Duncan of Blacksburg; three granddaughters, Larissa Duncan of Charlottesville, Sumitra Duncan of Blacksburg, and Susan Fuqua Shirley and husband, Bob of Houston, Texas, and Mr. Duncan's newborn great-grandson, Camper Thomas Shirley of Houston. A remembrance celebration will be held at Cozy Home Haven in Fairlawn at 7437 Peppers Ferry Blvd., on Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. In l ieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Tech Adult Dave Services program (231-3160), or to the Free Clinic and Program for Special Medical Care, P.O. FIELDS, Jerry Chitwood, 53, of Concord, formerly of Wytheville, died Friday, April 4, 1997 in the Virgin ia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Frazier and Alda Felty Fields and was a power line construction superintendent with L. E. Myers Company. He is survived by his wife, Janet Nuckols Fields, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Sidney Riley, Rustburg; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Rodney and Laura Fields, Concord, Darren Fields, of the home; three grandchildren, Joshua Fields, Lauren Fields and Nicole Riley; one sister, Mildred Williams, Wytheville; two brothers, Hubert Fields, Billy Fields, both of Wytheville. FISHER, Ruth Ann, 57, of Troutville, passed away Friday, April 4, 1997. She was a member of the Roanoke Church of Christ, and a retired Registered Nurse from the VA Medical Center and Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Fox and Charlotta Fox Church; a brother, William Fox, and a sister, Carrie Cales. Surviving are her husband, Roger P. Fisher; two sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Debra Fisher of Erie, Pa., and R. Steve and Carol Fisher of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Mitchell Fisher and Remington Fisher; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Mable Fox of Hinton, W.Va.; a sister, Amanda (``Susan"") King of Palmyra, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Hershel Dick of Powhatan, Va.; a number of loving sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and a number of nieces and nephews. FLADGER, JoAnn C., 29, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997. She is survived by her children, Chatai Fladger, Terrell Fladger, Kimberly Fladger, Khalif R. Fladger; mother and father, Curtis and Susie Fladger, New Jersey; six sisters and one brother-in-law, Lorraine, Ella Jean, Mary, Katrenea, and Kirkstine Fladger, all New Jersey, Myrtle and George Ottley, Tennessee; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Curtis Jr. and Phyllis Fladger, Rocky Mount, Walter Fladger, New Jersey. HARVEY, Evelyn Beller, 78, of Roanoke, died Friday, April 4, 1997. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John D. Beller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Harvey. Survivors include her sons, John M. Harvey, Stone Mountain, Ga. and Jerry Al Harvey, Walkville, Md.; granddaughters, Susan, Julie, Renee and Nicole; and nine great-grandchildren. HOOD, Harry Lawrence, 62, of Buchanan, passed away Saturday, April 5, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Wayne Hood of Castleton, N.Y. Mr. Hood retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and served as a law officer in various capacities in many locations from Key West, Fla., to Buchanan, Va. He retired as Chief of Police for the Town of Buchanan. Surviving are his wife, Shirley L. Hood; his mother, Isabelle H. Ringer of DeLand, Fla.; sons, John Andrew Hood of San Diego, Calif., and J. Shane Hood of Roanoke; daughter, Teresa M. Montgomery of Buchanan; stepson, P. J. Mundy of Roanoke; stepdaughter, Carol Draper of Roanoke; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Laroy J. Hood and Neale R. Hood, both of DeLand, Fla., and Peter R. HORNE, Willie J., 88, of 613 Glendale Road, Galax, widower of Elaine Fielder Horne, died Friday, April 4, 1997, at Richfield Retirement Center in Salem. He was born in Grayson County on January 2, 1909, a son of the late Steve and Lula Catron Horne. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Courey of Roanoke; a sister, Emma Burris of Galax; two grandchildren, Mary Olney of Roanoke and Chris Courey of Roanoke, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday , April 6, at the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel in Galax, with the Rev. Paul Jones and the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Interment will be in Monta Vista Memory Gardens.

HUTCHESON, James Preston, 94, of Ro anoke, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in a local hospital. Mr. Hutcheson was born in Boydton, the son of the late Charles Samuel Hutcheson and the late Nellie Mason Hutcheson. He was a retired salesman, and a longtime resident of 1873 Arlington Road, S.W. For the past year, he lived at Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Community. Mr. Hutcheson was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Daisy Clarke Lorentz Hutcheson; a son, Dr. James Sterling Hutcheson and his wife, Nancy Sanders Hutcheson of Charlotte, N.C.; two granddaughters, Anne Farrar Hutcheson of Dover, N.H., and Betsy Dulaney Hutcheson of Charlotte, N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews, including Elizabeth (``Suzie"") Hutcheson Fetter and her husband, Robert P. Fetter of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Evergreen Burial Park, at 11 a.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

JENNINGS, William, Jr., 87, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, April 3, 1997. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sally Lucy Jennings, and father, Dave Holly. Jennings (Pamela), Richard Jennings, all of Roanoke, Cecil Jennings (Maria), of Nevada, Morris Miller (Cynthia), Roanoke, Howard Miller (Bertha), Detroit, Mich., Keith Paxton, Coaling, Calif., Marcus Paxton (Karen), Roanoke; four daughters, Shelia Pierson, Cecilia Jennings of Nevada, Gracie Russell (Darrell), Roanoke, Lisa Whorley (Darnell), Winston-Salem, N.C.; three aunts, Alice Robertson, Elsie Jernigan and Margaret Garrison, all of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Blondine Augustus (George), Roanoke, Mary Willie Fountain, Youngstown, Ohio, Christine Pridgen, Tazewell County, Robert Pridgen, Akron, Ohio, Christine Ferguson (James); devoted friends, David and Evelyn Andrews and Marshall Pridgen; nieces, Theresa Smith, Carolyn Haynes (Hubert) and Gracie Weatherspoon of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at 12 noon at the Abundant Grace Assembly, with Elder Delmar Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the Williams Memorial Park. KUHEFUSS, Fred, 86, of Fincastle, passed away Friday, April 4, 1997. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and retired from IBM. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Kuhefuss; a daughter, Joan Mitchell of Tampa, Fla.; a nephew, Harold Kuhefuss of Caldwell, N.J., and a number of other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at Oakay's North Chapel at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, 1997, with Pastor John Hawn officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. LEFTWICH, Cynthia Gail, 32, of Bedford, died Friday, April 4, 1997 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital, Bedford, Va. She is survived by three daughters, Angela Leftwich, Wanda Leftwich, both of Roanoke, Frances Leftwich, Langhorne, Penn.; her mother, Mrs. Betty N. Leftwich, Roanoke; one sister, Bridgett Leftwich, Roano ke; one brother, Randolph Leftwich, Jr.; and a maternal grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Nelms, Bedford; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. MARTIN, Charles Markwood Jr., (``Buddy""), 44, of West Monroe, La., died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center. Mr. Martin was a native of Roanoke, Va., but had resided in West Monroe for the past 26 years. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran, and was employed with the United States Postal Service with over 25 years of service. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Martin. He is survived by his wife, Jennene Martin of West Monroe; father and stepmother, Charles and Carolyn Martin of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Kitty and Monte Looney of Roanoke; brother and sister-in-law, John and Wanda Martin of Roanoke; stepsister, Maggie Lawson and husband Jack of Roanoke; stepbrother, Chuck Duff and wife Mary of Roanoke; stepsons, Scotty Lindsay and wife Alice of West Monroe, Jason Lindsay of West Monroe; grandson, Clifton Lindsay of West Monroe; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Bishop of West Monroe; three nieces, and one nephew.
