CELEBRATIONS - WEDDINGS

Ferguson-Swann

Margaret Meredith Swann and Michael Lee Ferguson were married April 5, 1997 at Christ Lutheran Church. The Reverend Doctor William . Kinser performed the ceremony. Mrs. Karen Pendleton was lay lector. Mrs. Joy Wright was soloist and Mrs. Nancy Delaney was organist.

Margaret is the daughter of Mr. Arthur M. Swann, Jr. and the late Ruby W. Swann. She is a graduate of Radford University and Virginia Tech, and is employed by the Roanoke County School System. Michael is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Brooks Ferguson, and is a graduate of Roanoke College. He is employed by Roanoke City.

Honor attendants were Lisa and Mitzi Ferguson, sisters of the groom, Mary Beth Newton and Lisa Kegley Scott, friends of the bride.

Jerry D. Kidd, Jr. acted as best man. Groomsmen were William M. Babb, III, Jason Moyers and Craig Steele. All are graduates of Roanoke College.

Other members of the wedding party included Jerry D. Kidd, III as ringbearer and Lauren Price as flowergirl. Allyson Fortner served as guestbook attendant.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson will live in Roanoke.

Baldwin-Cavett

Lucy Moore Cavett and Alan Christopher Baldwin were wed April 5, 1997, in an afternoon service at Lee Chapel, Lexington, Virginia. The Reverend Robert Smith, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, officiated. A reception was held at the Natural Bridge Inn following the ceremony.

Janet Cavett attended her sister as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Katherine Boland, Kristina Dodds, Amy Peterson, Marisa Ritter and Kirsten Zegarski.

Chuck Hinton served as best man. Groomsmen were Eric Baldwin, brother of the groom, Elliott Cavett, brother of the bride, Kin Headley, Sean Killealea, Joe Marks and Mark Peterson.

Steve Zegarski and Kris Fegenbush read scripture. Musicians were Helen Chandler, violinist, and Ellen Dean, vocalist. Holly Layman and Molly Lawson attended the guest b ook.

The bride wore a floor length gown of silk shantung and carried a hand tied bouquet of spring flowers.

The bride is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Clinton Cavett of Roanoke, and the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Cavett of Jackson, Mississippi, and Mr. and Mrs. Van Elliott of Huntsville, Alabama. She is a graduate of Washington and Lee University and is employed by the Virginia Baptist Children's Home.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Baldwin of Roanoke, and the grandson of Mrs. Cecil Baldwin of Roanoke. He is a graduate of James Madison University, and he teaches at William Byrd High School.

After a wedding trip to the southern Caribbean, the couple will reside in Roanoke.

Bleecker-Milko

Susan Marie Milko and Douglas Dwight Bleecker were united in marriage Saturday, April 5, 1997, at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church. The ceremony was officiated by Father Steven R. Rule. The reception was held at The Water's Edge Country Club at Smith Mountain Lake.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl N. Milko of Roanoke, Va. She is the granddaughter of Anne Marguerite Milko of Daleville, Va. and t he late John A. Milko, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer T. Ebersol of West Chester, Pa.

The groom is the son of Mr. James F. Bleecker and Kathleen Elim, of Lake Anna, Va., and the late Inge Bleecker.

Nicole Gracely served as her sister's matron of honor. The bridesmaids were Angela Allen of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jeanne Curran of Falls Church, Va., Anne Deason of Atlanta, Ga., Sue Miller of Jamestown, N.C., and Jill Stiglicz of Atlanta, Ga., all special friends of the bride. Kaitlin Ebersol, the bride's cousin, of West Chester, Pa. and Adriana Martello, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martello of Ottawa, Canada, were the flowergirls.

The best man was Dave Standish of Alexandria, Va., good friend of the groom. The groomsmen were David John Bleecker of Richmond, Va., Ken Bleecker of Reston, Va., brothers of the groom, Dave Marchione of Fredericksburg, Va., Joe Martello, and Luigi Martello of Ottawa, Canada, all good friends of the groom, and John Milko, of Roanoke, brother of the bride. Benjamin Francisco, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Francisco of Roanoke, and Luca Martello, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martello of Ottawa, Canada, were the ringbearers.

Special music for the ceremony was graciously provided by Gordon Alling and Lori Mattson of Fredericksburg, Va., friends of the bride and groom, and April Eidson, friend of the bride's family.

After a wedding trip to Disney World and a cruise to the Bahamas, Mr. and Mrs. Bleecker will reside in Fredericksburg, Va.

Coles-McCallum

The marriage of Miss Kristie Leigh McCallum and Mr. Courtney Todd Coles took place on Saturday, March 29, 1997, at the University Chapel in Charlottesville.

The bride is the daughter of Joyce and Randy Rakes of Botetourt County and Herbert W. ``Buster'' and Emily McCallum of Salem. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard K. Coles of Charlottesville.

The bride wore a formal white gown featuring a basque bodice designed in silk taffeta with an overlay of embroidered Swiss lace, featuring short sleeves and a sculptured lace oval neckline. The bouffant skirt fashioned in layers of tulle fell into a chapel length train. Her fingertip veil of English illusion accented with matching lace medallions was attached to a satin band.

Maid of honor was Anna Beth Rakes, sister of the bride, of Botetourt County. Bridesmaids were Leslie Coles Walker of Chesapeake and Stephanie Patton of Annandale.

Bernard Coles was his son's best man. Groomsmen were Kevin Vogeley of Richmond, Weiman Seid of New York City, and Cole Rakes of Botetourt County.

The bride graduated from the University of Virginia and Radford University School of Nursing. She is currently employed with Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

The groom graduated from the University of Virginia and James Madison University and teaches at William Monroe Middle School in Greene County.

The reception was held at the Greencroft Club.

After a honeymoon in the Caribbean, the couple will live in Shenandoah.

Conner-Esparza

Tammy Leigh Esparza and Darin Thomas Conner were married April 5, 1997, at East Gate Church of the Nazarene. The ceremony took place at 2 o'clock in the afternoon with Rev. George Stevenson officiating. A reception followed in the church fellowship hall.

Jenna Fink, cousin of the bride, served as the matron of honor. Jessica Esparza and Emma Wilson, nieces of the bride, served as junior bridesmaids, along with Kimberly Thomason.

Jimmy VanGorden served as the best man. Robert Chittum and Mark Chittum, nephews of the bride, served as junior groomsmen, along with Cameron Conner, nephew of the groom.

Wanda Saunders, aunt of the groom, directed the wedding. Traci Thomason, niece of the bride, and Kelly Thomason attended the guest book.

The bride is the daughter of Linda Esparza of Moneta, and was given in marriage by her brother, T. J. Esparza.

The groom is the son of S. Jack and Joyce Conner of Troutville. He is the grandson of James and Laura Bell Thomas of Roanoke, Susie Conner of Roanoke, and the late S. J. Conner.

After a wedding trip to Walt Disney World, the couple will reside in Roanoke.

Cooper-Smith

Sherrie Ann Smith and Shawn Travis Cooper were married January 31, 1997 at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, Rocky Mount, Va. with Reverend Curtis C. English officiating. The reception was held in the fellowship hall.

The maid of honor was Shelia Smith, sister of the bride. The flowergirl was Courtney Ferguson, friend of the bride.

The best man was Don Cooper, brother of the groom. The usher was Joey Edwards, nephew of the groom. The ringbearer was Tamara Edwards, niece of the groom. Candlelighters were Jamie Cooper and Diana Boyd. The guestbook was attended by Teka Richey.

The bride is the daughter of C. C. and Glenda Smith of Roanoke County. She is a graduate of Cave Spring High School, Roanoke County, and is employed by the U.S. Postal Service.

The groom is the son of Elizabeth C. Edwards of Rocky Mount and the late John W. Edwards. He is a graduate of Franklin County High School, Rocky Mount, and attended Virginia Western Community College. He is employed by Fitzgerald's Asphalt and Sealing Co.

The newlyweds live in Roanoke after a wedding trip to Wintergreen, Va.

Garst-Rainey

Shannon Bess Rainey and Christopher Towne Garst were married April 5, 1997 at Evelynton Plantation with Rev. Thomas Lee officiating. The reception was held at Evelynton Plantation.

The maid of honor was Tracy Schutte. Bridesmaids were Anna Smith, Janet Smith, Michele Blanchard, Cindy Wilvert, Pattie Lee, and Lori Sutphin. Flowergirls were Ginny and Mary Beth Lee, cousins of the bride, and Leslie Anne Garst, niece of the groom.

The best man was Ronald Dean Garst, Sr., brother of the groom. Ushers were Thomas Reed, Andy Trinko, Wes Rainey, brother of the bride, Rick Dodson, Rob King, Steve Magee, and Jim Wilvert. Ringbearer was Chadson Sutphin, nephew of the groom. Greeters were Allison Williams, Heather Worsham and Tessa Ashwell.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ryland R. Rainey, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth B. Smith of Richmond. She is employed by Capital One Services, Inc.

The groom is the son of Kay Garst of Richmond and the late Ronald Dean Garst, Sr. He is also employed by Capital One Services, Inc.

The newlyweds will make their home in Richmond after their honeymoon.

Jarrett-Wright

Mary Jane Wright and Cecil A. Jarrett, Jr. were married on March 15, 1997, at North Roanoke Baptist Church in Roanoke. The ceremony took place at 4:00 p.m. with Dr. Daryl Crim officiating.

The bride was given in marriage by her son, Nathan W. Wright. Ruth Ball, sister of the bride, was the matron of honor. Carolyn Wohlford, Davina Wingate, Kelly Adams, Virginia Allison and Ellen Hackler, friends of the bride, served as bridesmaids. The flowergirls were Amber and Katie Rankin, nieces of the bride.

The best man was Shields Jarrett, brother of the groom. The ushers were W. C. Adams, P. K. Bivens, Mike Ewers, Carlyle Kemp and Claude Pich. The ringbearer was Marty Hackler.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Mabel T. Rankin of Austinville, Va. and the late Thomas C. Rankin. She is property manager at Hunters Ridge and Collegiate Suites Student Communities in Blacksburg, Va.

The groom is the son of the late Mrs. Margaret Shields Jarrett and Cecil A. Jarrett. He is employed at New York Carpet World in Roanoke, Va.

The couple will make their home in Roanoke, Va. after a wedding trip to Jamaica.

Jones-Burch

Karen Elizabeth Burch and Timothy Codell Jones were married December 21, 1996, in Bent Mountain Lodge, Copper Hill, Va., with the Rev. Jerry Parr, brother-in-law of the groom, officiating. The reception was held at Bent Mountain Lodge. Bridesmaids were Wendy Anne Lawrence and Deborah Lynn Janson, sisters of the bride. Codell Jones, father of the groom, was best man. The bride is a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. Gordon Burch of Roanoke. She is a graduate of Cave Spring High School in Roanoke and is attending National Business College in Roanoke. She is employed by Roanoke Neurological Associates. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Codell Jones of Salem. He is a graduate of Salem High School and is self-employed. The couple will live in Salem.

Joplin-Leonard

Sarah Dawn Leonard and Joe Saunders Joplin III were married on April 5, 1997, in Saint Andrews Catholic Church, with Father Randy Rule and Reverend David Miller offic iating. The reception was held at the Marriott Hotel.

Matron of honor was Shelley Cooper of Roanoke. The bridesmaids were Rebecca Dearing of Vail, Colo., Kristin Dyl, Leanne Godwin, Trisha Jones, Marisa Ketterer, Nichole Witt, cousin of the bride, all of Roanoke; Alice Joplin, sister of the groom, of Greensboro, N.C.; Chrissy Neighbors of Blacksburg, and Anya Pardue of Arlington, Va. The flowergirl was Chandler Nelson of Roanoke.

Best man was John Boothe Joplin, father of the groom. Groomsmen were Taz Cooper, Keith Grindstaff, Jamey Leonard, brother of the bride, Matthew Leonard, brother of the bride, and Creg Matthews, all of Roanoke; Jay Joplin, cousin of the groom, John Joplin, cousin of the groom, both of Rocky Mount, Va., and Randy Welch of Greensboro, N.C. Ringbearer was Tyler Leonard, nephew of the bride, of Roanoke.

Soloist was Lisa Maillart of Blacksburg. Special thanks go out to Kitty Fugate, Betty Nelson and Carolyn Rains, aunts of the bride, and Don and Drue Cass, all of Roanoke.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James D. Leonard of Roanoke. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Leonard and Mrs. Juanita Lee, all of Roanoke, and the late Worley S. Hickam. She is the step-granddaughter of the late Lucian V. Lee. She is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and Virginia Tech.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Joplin of Rocky Mount, Va. He is a graduate of Franklin County High School and Virginia Tech. He is self-employed.

The couple will make their home in Greensboro, N.C., after a wedding trip to Cancun, Mexico.

McClure-Rodriguez

Karen Beth Rodriguez and Stephen James McClure were married April 5, 1997, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Roanoke, Va., with Rev. William Wells, uncle of the bride, and Pastor Ken Studer officiating. The reception was held at the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel.

The matron of honor was Jennifer Schutte, friend of the bride. Bridesmaids were Kim Moon and Kathy Tickle, sisters of the bride, Kristen Ashley, niece of the bride, and Karen Crush, sister of the groom. The flowergirl was Adriana Tickle, niece of the bride. Trainbearer was Kristopher Ashley, nephew of the bride.

The best man was Dr. Clarence S. McClure, father of the groom. Ushers were C larence S. McClure, Jr., brother of the groom, Dennis Duncan, Dale Carpenter, and Mike Blanton, friends of the groom. Ringbearer was Matthew Crush, nephew of the groom. Candlelighters were Dale Carpenter and Mike Blanton. The guestbook was attended by Mrs. Bobby Wells.

The bride wore a mermaid style gown with beaded alencon lace and detachable train. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Rodriguez of Pocahontas, Va. She is a graduate of Pocahontas High School, Pocahontas, Va. and Radford University School of Nursing, Radford, Va. She is employed by Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital as a Labor & Delivery nurse.

The bridegroom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Clarence S. McClure of Daleville, Va. He is a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, Daleville, Va. and Radford University, Radford, Va. He is employed by Member One Federal Credit Union, Salem, Va.

The newlyweds will live in Roanoke, Va. after their honeymoon cruise to the Western Caribbean.

Rakes-James

Kellie Renee' James and Richard Charles Rakes were married April 5, 1997, at Cave Spring Baptist Church. The ceremony took place at 2:00 p.m. and was officiated by Rev. Rick Elmore. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Atrium at the Jefferson Center.

Jennifer Hodges, friend of the bride, attended as matron of honor. Jennifer James, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Karen Blankenship and Brenda Taylor, friends of the bride, and Melissa James, cousin of the bride. Flower girl was Morgan Boone, cousin of the bride. Best man was Wade Hodges, friend of the groom. Groomsmen were Chris Hanson, cousin of the bride, Richard Blankenship, Tim Taylor and Steve Norvell, friends of the groom. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rakes of Rocky Mount. Richard is a graduate of Franklin County High School. He is employed by Norfolk Southern.

After a romantic cruise to the Western Caribbean, the couple will reside in Roanoke.

Roberts-Mullins

Melissa Mullins and Mark S. Roberts were married February 27, 1997, in a chapel in Las Vegas, Nev. with Rev. Richard Conrad officiating.

The matron of honor was Rebecca Connor, friend. The best man was Tony Connor, friend.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. Dennis Mullins of Buchanan, Va. and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Trent of Vinton, Va. She is a graduate of James River High School, Buchanan, Va., and is employed by GTE Wireless (Mobilnet), Inc., Roanoke, Va.

The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Emma Lee Roberts of Buchanan and the late Mr. R. L. Roberts. He is a graduate of James River High School, Buchanan, Va., and is employed by Roanoke Restaurant Service, Salem, Va.

The newlyweds are living in Roanoke, Va. after their honeymoon in Las Vegas.

Vos-Churchill

Rhonwen Margaret Emma Churchill and Ralph Henry Vos were married on Saturday, June 1st, 1996, at Grace Episcopal Church, Radford, Va. The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Eugene Anderson and Reverend James Grealish.

The bride is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Russell J. Churchill of Radford, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Vos of Cape Cod.

The bride was escorted and given in marriage by her father. Samantha Solander was maid of honor. The bridesmaids were Mair Churchill, Gwyneth Churchill and Ceri Williams, all sisters of the bride.

The best man was Mr. Stuart Hickman. The groomsmen were Messrs. Richard Dienes, Mitchell Kasten and Richard Jablonski. The guestbook attendant was Julie Samuelson.

The reception was held at the Homestead Inn, Claytor Lake. A neighborhood shower was hosted by Ms. Johanna Craig, Mrs. Caroline Long and Mrs. Martha Doud.

The honeymoon was spent in Bermuda.
