ARRINGTON, Dorene Leigh Wood, 26, of Glade Hill, passed away Sunday, April 6, 1997. Born March 12, 1971, she was a daughter of Roger S. Jr. and Lois Hale Wood. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Don R. and Dale R. Wood; and grandparents, Hampton and Dora Hale. Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Joseph Arrington of the home; two stepdaughters, Crystal Faye Arrington and Tammy Jo Arrington, both of Rocky Mount; six sisters, Sandra McGouryk of Douglas, Ga., Brenda Beckner of Callaway, Donna L. Godwin of Ormond Beach, Fla., Donna J. Hunn of Alma, Ga., Darla Wood Wilson of Daytona Beach, Fla., Darlene McGhee of Moneta; one brother, Bruce Miller of Moneta; father-in-law, Jim Arrington of Glade Hill; paternal grandmother, Rose Wood of Port Orange, Fla.; special niece, Crystal Hunn; dear friend, Angel Stilton Profitt; several nieces, nephews; two great-nieces; four great-nephews. BLANKENSHIP, Ralph E., 74, of Clinchburg, died Sunday, April 6, 1997, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. Mr. Blankenship was an Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippines. He was a retired Postmaster and also a retired employee of The U.S. Gypsum Company. Mr. Blankenship was a member of Mahanaim United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah B. Stephenson. Surviving are his wife, Regina Grady Blankenship, Clinchburg; three daughters, Mrs. Gale (Kay) Maiden, Mrs. Mike (Sheila) Heldreth, Ms. Karen Blankenship, all of Clinchburg; two brothers, Paul V. Blankenship, Bradenton, Fla., Herbert W. Blankenship, Clinchburg; two granddaughters, Krista Maiden, Clinchburg, Jill Howard, Nashville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Ralph E. Blankenship will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at the Mahanaim United Methodist Church with Rev. David Mumpower, Rev. BLESSING, Barton Shane, (``Bart""), 26, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Sunday, April 6, 1997 in an Atlanta, Ga. hospital. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Bart was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work and received an Associate degree from Hiwassee College and graduated from Bradley Central High. Bert was very active with the Georgia Donor Services and the Kidney Foundation and had served as a counselor for the Georgia Children's Kidney Camp. He is survived by his parents, Betty Jo and Bill Blessing of Cleveland and formerly of Wythe County; brother, Mike Blessing of Elijay, Georgia; grandmother, Ruth Blessing of Wytheville. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the North Chapel of Buckner-Rush Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bill Campbell. BOONE, Annie Greer, 78, of Salem, went to be with her Lord on Mo nday, April 7, 1997. A long time member of Salem Church of Christ, she will best be remembered for her love of children. CLARK, Linda Sue, (``Sue Baby''), 40, of Roanoke, passed away in a local hospital on Saturday, April 5, 1997. She is survived by her husband, Calvin W. COIL, Dr. Emory Alfred, 69, of Blacksburg, passed away at his home on Monday, April 7, 1997. Born July 5, 1927 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Coil was the son of the late Louise Baum and Harold Steen Coil. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Louise Coil Pilley. Dr. Coil served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Prior to his service he attended Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio. After his service he entered George Washington University, Washington, D.C., where he received his AB and MA degrees in math, at the same time instructing at that university. After three years with the National Security Agency as a cryptographer, he entered the aerospace program as a computer systems designer and moved to Los Angeles, Calif. He was part of the team which designed the computer systems for the space shuttles, Enterprise and Columbia. While with Northrop Aircraft Corp. he entered their advanced degree program and did graduate work at CalTech, Pasadena, Calif. and received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Kensington University, Glendale, Calif. in 1982. As a member of the adjunct faculty of Kensington University he was sent to Bangkok, Thailand in 1983 to work with officials there in laying the groundwork for the Computer Science program at Chulalongkorn University. Dr. Coil retired from Northrop Aircraft Corp. in September 1992 and moved to Blacksburg in February 1993. On a personal note, Dr. Coil was world-traveled, and was a member of the Adventurers' Club of Los Angeles, an affiliate of the Savage Club of London. He was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, The Argonauts, and The Society for Ancient Numismatics. Dr. Coil is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cerrie Crews Coil; two daughters, Dr. Janet (Kevin) Collins of Stratford, Conn., Ms. Barbara Coil of Blacksburg; and one son, Dr. Donald Emory Coil of Stockholm, Sweden. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christopher and Abigail Guthrie, and Sean Collins of Stratford, Conn., Sara Ann Coil of Santa Cruz, Calif., Samuel and Jim Axel Coil of Stockholm, Sweden, and Eilyn and Robin Coil of Blacksburg. He also leaves one niece, Cynthia Davis of Albuquerque, N.M. As per the wishes of the deceased, there will be no funeral services. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

FERRIS, Noah Elton, 69, of Roanoke County, died Sunday, April 6, 1997. He was a son of Robert L. and Virgie Ferris. He was a member of Rainbow Forest Baptist Church. Mr. Ferris was a former car salesman in the Roanoke Valley for several different dealerships. He was a retired owner and operator of Contract Furniture Carriers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny ``Whitey'' Ferris; two sisters, Mable Barusick and Omega Madison. HOOD, Harry Lawrence, 62, of Buchanan, passed away Saturday, April 5, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Wayne Hood of Castleton, N.Y. Mr. Hood retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and served as a law officer in various capacities in many locations from Key West, Fla., to Buchanan, Va. He retired as Chief of Police for the Town of Buchanan. Surviving are his wife, Shirley L. Hood; his mother, Isabelle H. Ringer of DeLand, Fla.; sons, John Andrew Hood of San Diego, Calif., and J. Shane Hood of Roanoke; daughter, Teresa M. Montgomery of Buchanan; stepson, P. J. PRUNTY, Rev. Dr. Alfred Septemius, 71, of Roanoke, went to his eternal reward on Sunday, April 6, 1997 at the Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Va. He was the son of the late Robert C. & Jennie L. Prunty. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laverne Prunty and three brothers, James, Giles and William Prunty. He was retired from the Roanoke Veterans' Hospital as a Therapist. He was also Pastor of Slate Hill Baptist Church in Roanoke County and recently retired from that position. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of Lucy Addison High School and furthered his education at Virginia Union University. Surviving his death are his daughter, Melissa Kemp and her son, Jesse; one sister, Dorothy Brown; one brother, John (Elnora) Prunty; his sister-in-law, Edna B. Prunty. He was cared for by his niece and nephew, Dorothy and Edward Hamline of Richmond, Va.; and a host of other relatives and many friends. He was past president of the Baptist Ministers' Conference, served on the City Managers Task Force for Human Relations and was very active in religious, civic and community activities. Funeral services will be Friday, April 11, 1997 at 2 p.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ced ric Malone officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. SENIC, Plina Hampton Bartlett, 73, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., passed away Sunday, April 6, 1997 after a prolonged illness in Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg , Va. She was born March 28, 1924 in Galax, Va., the daughter of Clayton B. and Sadie Hampton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman G. Bartlett, a life-long resident of Galax. She is survived by her present husband, Steve Senic; sons and daughters-in-law, Elwood H. and Louise of Yorktown, Va., Clayton (C.L.) and Shirley, Dr. Herman G. and Susan of Blacksburg, Thomas G. and Tammy of Colonial Heights; and stepdaughter, Betty Dixon and her husband, Charlie, of McGaheysville; brothers, C. B. Hampton of Roanoke and Griggs Hampton of Galax; sisters, Wanda Bartlett and Lorene Patton of Galax and Katherine Bush of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Richard Bartlett, Todd Bartlett, Mickey Bartlett(deceased), Susan Blackburn, Sarah Bartlett, Adam Bartlett, Joshua Bartlett and Christopher Bartlett; two stepgrandchildren, Stephany Roach and Melody Dalen; six great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel, with the Rev. Douglas W. Kanney officiating. Burial will follow in the McKenzie Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening and will receive friends following from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax.
SHARTZER, Louis G., (``Jiggs'') 70, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday evening, April 6, 1997. He was a retired Vice President and General Manager of Wrenn Lumber Corporation of Roanoke. Mr. Shartzer was a life long member of Waverly Place Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard H. and Cassie Shartzer, and a sister, Lorraine Scaggs. Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years, Harriette Spencer Shartzer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy S. and Galen Pate, Roanoke, Robin S. and Johnny Maxey, Rocky Mount; a son, Scott Shartzer, Roanoke. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Leslie Pate Gibson, Roanoke, Wendy Maxey, West Palm Beach, Fla.; a great-grandson, Trey Allen Gibson; two brothers, Horton Shartzer, Roanoke, Mahlon Shartzer, Vinton; three sisters, Mildred Martin, Roanoke, Norma Stump, Florida, Betty Holland, Richmond; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Waverly Place Baptist Church, with Dr. Steve A. Spangler and the Rev. Charles Hoffler officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. VANNESS, Norman Burton, 65, of Lexington, died Monday, April 7, 1997 at his home. Mr. Vanness was born in Rockbridge Co. on June 9, 1931 and was a son of the late Theodore L. Vanness and Emma Gold Reynolds Vanness. He was a member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, Lexington, a member of the V.F.W. #1499, charter member of the Blue Ridge Riders Club, member of AQHA, past member of Effinger Fire Department, and was a retired equipment operator for Rockbridge County. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty V. Clark and a son-in-law, Tommy Turpin. Mr. Vanness is survived by his wife, Carrie H. Vanness, Lexington; one daughter, Karen V. Turpin, Lexington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Gold and Keith Parrent, Glasgow, Donna V. and C.B. Potter, Lexington; four grandsons, T.J. Turpin, John Turpin, Kevin Parrent, Derek Parrent; two stepgrandsons, Cavett Potter and Paul Potter; and a faithful canine companion, Pepper.
