UVA ALUMNI GIVE RAISES

The University of Virginia Alumni Association has pledged $1 million to raise faculty salaries above the increases approved by the General Assembly.

``The alumni of this university understand that its national reputation stems directly from the quality of its teachers and scholars,'' Roby Robinson Jr., president of the alumni organization's managing board, said Monday.

The General Assembly already has approved faculty raises statewide of 4 percent to 6 percent next year.
