Hazardous space prompts recall of 3,100 bunk beds
WASHINGTON - Manufacturers are recalling 3,100 wooden and metal bunk beds because openings on the top bunk can trap a child's head, federal officials said.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 38 children have died after getting their heads caught in such a space.
Since November 1994, manufacturers have recalled more than 511,400 wooden bunk beds with similar hazards. Manufacturers also have identified dangers in metal bunk beds.
The manufacturers participating in this recall are Acme Trading Corp., of Vernon, Calif.; Chicken & Egg Furniture of Seattle; IEM Furniture of City of Commerce, Calif. ; Lewis Furniture Manufacturing Co. in Williamston, S.C., and Silver Eagle Corp., of Sacramento, Calif.

Negotiations at impasse in General Motors strike
OKLAHOMA CITY - Negotiations to settle a strike at a General Motors Corp. assembly plant remain stalled over safety issues and farming out union jobs to nonunion suppliers, union officials said Tuesday.
About 3,500 members of United Auto Workers Local 1999 have been off the job since shortly before midnight Friday. Negotiators have met daily since the strike began.
Talks also have stalled over health, safety and work force issues at the plant that produces the Chevrolet Malibu and the Oldsmobile Cutlass - two key models in GM's new midsize lineup.
The UAW and GM signed a national contract in December, but hourly workers in Oklahoma City and several other plants have gone without local contracts since September.
