R.R. Donnelley & Sons, the Chicago company about to open a book factory in Roanoke County, was responsible for the region's largest building permit last month. The company's permit was for construction valued at $6.8 million, which helped drive up the value of March permits in the valley to $17.2 million.
Roanoke County had values of $11.1 million including 51 single-family homes worth more than $3 million.
Roanoke reported $4.7 million worth of new construction, the largest a $988,750 remodeling of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. store at Valley View Mall. Salem's permits of $1.3 million included interior alterations at Columbia Lewis-Gale Medical Center for about $100,000.
