COUNSELOR CONVICTED OF SEXUAL BATTERY, GETS 9 MONTHS

A camp counselor who worked at the 4-H Center at Smith Mountain Lake was convicted of three counts of misdemeanor sexual battery Tuesday.

Joseph W. Doyle, 23, of Roanoke, inappropriately touched three girls over several hours July 10, 1996, at the 4-H center, said Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Cliff Hapgood. The girls were 13, 14 and 16.

No intercourse was involved, Hapgood said.

Juvenile Court Judge David Melesco sentenced Doyle to nine months in jail.

Doyle has appealed the convictions, Hapgood said.

Two felony charges of sexual battery and object penetration against Doyle will be considered later by a Franklin County grand jury, the prosecutor said.
