Old Dominion center Odell Hodge has been named the Division I men's basketball player of the year in Virginia by the state's sports information directors.
Hodge, the 1992 Timesland player of the year when he was at Laurel Park, averaged 18.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Monarchs. He was joined on the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) all-state first team by Virginia Tech's Ace Custis, Liberty's Peter Aluma, George Mason's Nate Langley and Virginia Commonwealth's Patrick Lee.
Custis, a senior from Eastville, averaged 14.7 points and 9.0 rebounds in his senior season.
Virginia's Harold Deane and Courtney Alexander, and Radford's Anthony Walker were second-team selections.
Old Dominion's Jeff Capel, who guided the Monarchs to a 22-12 record and their second NCAA Tournament appearance in three years, was chosen coach of the year.
FOOTBALL
Defense controls scrimmage
Defensive end Corey Moore, a redshirt sophomore, had three sacks to highlight Virginia Tech's football scrimmage.
Al Clark, the leading candidate at quarterback, completed four of 10 passes for 70 yards. Kicker Shayne Graham (Pulaski County) converted field goals of 37, 44 and 21 yards.
The Hokies' spring game is 2 p.m. April 19 at Lane Stadium.
BASEBALL
Auburn smacks VMI
Tim Hudson homered twice and drove in four runs to lead second-ranked Auburn to a 17-3 victory over the Keydets on Wednesday in Auburn, Ala. Hudson, the Southeastern Conference batting leader, went 3-for-5 to raise his average to .468. Auburn (33-4) had three other players with three hits.
VMI (12-26) starter Jay Adams gave up seven runs in five innings.
Ferrum: Riley Hodges (Franklin County) hit two home runs to move closer to the Panthers' single-season record as they routed Guilford 17-3 in Ferrum.
Hodges went 4-for-5 with two home runs, his 12th and 13th of the year, and drove in four runs for the Panthers (23-5). Jerold Smith (1991) and Grant Renfrew ('89) hit 15 homers in a season for Ferrum. Guilford is 12-16.
Radford: Justin Lamber homered and tripled and knocked in four runs as Richmond defeated the visiting Highlanders 9-2.
First baseman Chris Carr (William Byrd) homered for Radford (17-20) in the third inning. Kelly Dampeer (Northside) added two hits for the Highlanders.
BASKETBALL
Teasley picks UNC
Nikki Teasley, one of the top women's prospects in the country, announced she will sign a letter of intent to attend North Carolina.
Teasley, from St. John's Prospect Hall in Frederick, Md., listed Virginia as one of the schools she was considering. She averaged 27.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists as a senior.
LACROSSE
Maroons beat Greensboro
Bobby Vallario had four goals and an assist to lead Roanoke to a 15-8 victory over Greensboro College.
Roanoke (7-2) used a pair of five-goal spurts to take control of the game. Paul Baly had two goals and three assists, and Jason Davenport had three goals for the Maroons.
GOLF
Hole-in-one contest
Golfers with accuracy will be rewarded in the Coca-Cola/Kazim Shriners Hole-In-One Shootout, a four-month-long event being held at 12 courses. Golfers who make a hole in one in the regionals will receive a prize, and anyone making a hole in one in the final will win $1 million.
