Julie Taylor of Roanoke battled wind, hail and a field of pro and expert cyclists to win the Fuller Nissan Eastern Shore Mountain Bike Championships March 29 in Wye Mills, Md.
The race, scheduled for six laps around a rolling course, was shortened to five because of the bad weather. Taylor came from 30 seconds behind at the halfway point to win by 30 seconds.
It is the second race and second victory of the season for Taylor, who also picked up a win March 22 in Hendersonville, N.C.
After one week of competition, Jeffrey Bower of Roanoke leads two events in the handicap division of the men's Virginia State Bowling Tournament.
The tournament runs 10 successive weekends and features more than 6,500 bowlers. The team events take place at the Vinton Bowling Center; the singles and doubles events are at Lee Hi Lanes in Salem.
Bower rolled an 808 series to pace the singles event. Other Roanokers in the top 10 are: Brian Nimmo, third (773); Gerrit Lemkuil, fifth (769); G. Nathan Motley, sixth (760); Mark Jones, seventh (758), and Thomas Snellings, 10th (748).
Bower also leads in the all events (handicap) category with a total of 2,211. Jones is second (2,208) and Snellings is fifth (2,136).
Rutledge Paint & Body #1 of Roanoke is first in the team (handicap) event with a total of 3,483. Roanoke's Riverside Quickette is ninth (3,308).
In the doubles (handicap) event, four teams from Roanoke are in the top eight. Winfred Anderson and Randall Minnix are third with 1,446, followed by Jason Toney and Mark Jones, fourth (1,442), Dennis Oyler and Michael Henson, sixth (1,401), and Dave Pankavich and Glenn Gibson, eighth (1,384).
The scratch division of the tournament, dominated by teams from the Washington, D.C., and Richmond areas, features one Roanoke team in the standings. Eddie and Scott Morgan are ninth in the doubles event.
Breeze Ross scored 13 points and Kate Childress added 12 as the 12-Under Roanoke Stars White girls basketball team claimed the AAU West Region
championship Sunday in Roanoke. The Stars defeated Central Virginia Blue (Lynchburg) 63-41.
In the 11-Under division, the Roanoke Stars White team defeated Piedmont Pride (Martinsville) 41-23 in the championship game. Brittnie Hughes scored 13 points for Roanoke and Chassity Martin added 10.
Both Roanoke teams advance to the state AAU tournament April 18-20 in Charlottesville.
Roanoke's Andy Bauman set a zone record and three state records en route to five first-place finishes at the Eastern Zone Swimming Championships April 3-5 in Buffalo, N.Y.
Bauman, who swims in the boys 11-12 division for the Carter Center Aquatics Marlins, placed first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.79 seconds. The mark set a zone record and a new Virginia state record. He also set state records in the 50 backstroke (26.59) and the 100 backstroke (57.29), taking first in both events.
Bauman also won the 50 fly and 100 individual medley and was second in the 100 free.
In 15-18 girls' competition, the Marlins' Laura Dichtel earned a second-place finish in the 500 free, was fifth in the 1,650 free and eighth in the 200 free. Molly Henderson took third in the 200 backstroke.
In 13-14 girls, Jamie Trivett was fourth in the 100 free and 200 free. In 11-12 girls, Lindsay Hock took eighth in the 500 free. In 13-14 boys, Tom Rappold earned sixth place in the 100 fly.
