CAFE CATERS TO TEENS

Saucers Cafe, a place where students can hang out and do homework, is having its grand opening.

A steaming mocha java sits beside a half-eaten blueberry muffin. A high school student flips the pages of his algebra book, looking for the day's assignment.

Randy Boush hopes Saucers Cafe will be filled with students like this after its grand opening. Boush is the teen supervisor at the Brambleton Teen Center.

The new coffee shop catering to teen-agers in the Teen Center in Roanoke County, will celebrate its grand opening from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday. The teen center staff, which also will operate the cafe, hopes it will be a gathering place for teens to hang out with their friends, do their homework and enjoy an atmosphere geared just for them.

"No other coffee shops cater to teens," Boush said. "You can do all the things you can do at a coffee shop while still being at the teen center."

Boush also hopes the cafe will enhance the teen program, which includes renting space for parties and special events.

The opening is free, and most of the drinks and refreshments will be, too. Julie Ann Sgroi, a senior at Cave Spring High School, and the Julie Ann Band will provide the music.

Except for special events, a teen-ager will have to be a member of the teen center to get into the cafe. The membership costs $12 a year and is open to all teens, regardless of where they live.

The teen center, at 3738 Brambleton Ave., is open from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and until 10:30 p.m. Friday. Saucers Cafe will keep the same hours. For more information, call the Brambleton Teen Center at 772-2058.
