THINGS TO DO

Red/Bluecoats battle at Explore Park

If you were expecting a clash between Paris designers, this is not it. But, there will be lots of costumes at Explore Park's festival site Saturday and Sunday when British Redcoats, kilted Highlanders and Tory militias re-enact Washington's Bluecoats and Colonial troops' fight for liberty.

The re-enactment is quite authentic, with encampments, Colonial games and entertainment. Rodney the Younger's historical, hysterical magic show is a sure treat for all ages. Shopkeepers will sell goods from the period.

If you like sure bets, you can wager on who wins the battle. If you need a schedule, call 427-1800. Park admission gets you into everything.

Faulkner comes to life at VWCC

When Clark Gable was introduced to William Faulkner, he asked, ``Oh, Mr. Faulkner, do you write?'' Faulkner's reply was, ``Yes, and what do you do, Mr. Gable?''

From this comes the title of a one-man play about the Southern novelist, but not necessarily a biographical one. John Maxwell, from Faulkner's hometown of Oxford, Miss., will present the play Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Virginia Western Community College's Whitman Auditorium.

``My aim is not to see how close I come to being William Faulkner,'' Maxwell said in an earlier interview. ``My aim is to present a persona that is Faulkner's essence.''

When the author's daughter saw the play, she gave Maxwell a hat and pipe that had belonged to Faulkner ``for authenticity's sake.''

Tickets are $8 and can be purchased by phone (857-7334).

Piece(s) and quiet for charity

Spend a quiet Sunday afternoon and help promote peace - not on a global scale, but by supporting the Conflict Resolution Center's ``Piece and Quiet.''

Desserts from local bakeries and that place with those tempting cheesecakes (Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea), a silent auction and the soothing sounds of Mickey Nelson and Richard Kelley will create a pleasant refuge Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. in Hollins College's Moody Center.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Call 342-2063.
