Two Roanoke Valley science teachers have been cited for excellence and awarded $2,500 prizes in a national scholars program.
Two Roanoke Valley teachers, Donna Conner and John Kowalski, are national winners in the Tandy Technology Scholars program this year.
Conner, a science teacher in Roanoke County's gifted program, and Kowalski, a biology teacher at the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, have each been awarded a $2,500 cash prize.
They were pictured in the March 31 edition of Time magazine along with the other winners in this year's competition.
The scholars program, created eight years ago and funded by Tandy Corp., annually gives $2,500 awards to 100 U.S. teachers for achievement in science, math and computer science instruction.
Tandy also awards $1,000 scholarships to 100 students nationally each year. There were no student winners from the Roanoke Valley this year.
The awards are designed to encourage students and teachers to help America better compete in the world marketplace.
Conner taught physical science at Hidden Valley Junior High in Roanoke County before becoming a resource teacher in the county's gifted program. She was a teacher in Tennessee and Ohio before coming to Roanoke County six years ago.
Kowalski, who was named the state's biology teacher of the year in 1996, has taught at the Governor's School for a decade. He taught in college for 10 years before coming to the Roanoke school.
