HOKIES STROLL PAST LIBERTY

Rob Simms and Blake Clancy combined on a nine-hitter and Kevin Kurilla drove in four runs Thursday to lead Virginia Tech to a 9-3 non-conference baseball victory over Liberty in Lynchburg.

Sims (2-2) worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and five walks. Clancy finished up for his second save, allowing a hit and a walk.

Nick Perlozzo added a homer for the Hokies (19-18) and Matt Griswold and Chad Foutz (Franklin County) had three hits apiece.

Ben Barker paced Liberty (15-19) with a two-run homer.

Roanoke women roll

Roanoke College's women's team won its 17th consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference match, 20-2, over visiting Sweet Briar College.

Ali Ogelsby, a junior attacker, led the fifth-ranked Maroons (8-2 overall, 5-0 ODAC) with six goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Kara Hedges added four goals and an assist. Lisa Franzino, a senior midfielder, scored two goals to raise her career total to 84, which is 10 shy of the school record.

Roanoke held Sweet Briar (0-4, 0-3) to eight shots.

Victory runs tonight

Victory Stadium Speedway's second night of racing is set for tonight. Dudley Lawhorne of Rustburg will try for his second consecutive Late Model Stock victory in the J93.5-FM 200.

The double-points event is a 50-lap Late Model race, a 35-lap Mini-Stock and Pure Stock race and a 25-lap Rookie race. General admission is $8, with a $2 off discount coupon from area sponsors. Children under 10 are free. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing begins at 8.

Academic All-America: Virginia field hockey player Heather Hale has been named to the GTE Academic All-America second team in the university division. Hale is a senior psychology major from Virginia Beach. As a midfielder/back Hale set a school record with 20 assists this past fall and finished second on the career list with 37. She was a third-team All-America selection.

Washington & Lee swimmer Nathan Hottle, a senior from Clearbrook, was named to the first team in the college division. Hottle, a physics-engineering major with a 3.8 GPA, was an All-America in two events at the NCAA Division III championships.
