Drug-resistant salmonella has reached the U.S.
ATLANTA - A strain of salmonella bacteria that killed 10 people in Britain in 1994 and has proved resistant to common antibiotics has reached the U.S.
Salmonella typhimurium DT104, discovered in the United Kingdom in 1984, caused an outbreak among 19 children in Nebraska in October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. The children had diarrhea, nausea and fever.
The CDC found that the bacteria are resistant to ampicillin and tetracycline. The drugs trimethoprim and fluoroquinolones are being used to treat the infections in Britain, but the bacteria are becoming resistant to them as well.

AFL-CIO launches site to track executive pay
WASHINGTON - Giving workers a glimpse behind the boardroom doors, the AFL-CIO launched an Internet site Thursday that provides information on the soaring salaries paid to corporate leaders.
The site, ``Executive Paywatch,'' will provide salary and other compensation information for the chief executive officers of all the Fortune 500 companies and allow workers to compare their pay with their bosses.
Later, the site will provide access to proxy information for hundreds of companies outside the Fortune 500.
``At a time when America desperately needs a raise, it is devastating to workers' morale to realize that they would have to work thousands, literally thousands of years to earn what their CEO takes home,'' said AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Rich Trumka.
The ``Executive Paywatch'' address is www.paywatch.org.
