The number of new business licenses in the Roanoke Valley remained the same - 204 in both March 1997 and March 1996. Roanoke had 120 of these business licenses issued to newly formed companies, while Roanoke County reported 84.

Valley Metro to test free parking at garage near City Market

Valley Metro Parking Services will test free public parking at Century Station parking garage on nights and weekends.

Beth Carter, spokeswoman for Valley Metro, said the trial run, which starts next week, is an effort to attract more people to downtown.

Parking will be free between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekday evenings and all day on Saturdays and Sundays. The garage is on Church Avenue Southeast in the Roanoke City Market area. Reserved spaces will be protected, Carter said.

The garage contains 468 spaces. The number that are reserved was not available.
