SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR NAMED ROANOKE OFFICIALS CONSIDERED MORE THAN 150 APPLICATIONS

Shauna Bishop, former executive director of the Community Foundation of the New River Valley, has accepted the position.

When Laban Johnson retired as the city of Roanoke's special events coordinator last year, friends and colleagues predicted he would be hard to replace.

They were right. But nearly a year later, after sorting through more than 150 applications, city officials have finally found the person they think is right for the job: Shauna Bishop, who until now has served as executive director of the Community Foundation of the New River Valley.

Bishop, the foundation's first full-time director, announced Thursday that she was resigning from that post to take the job in Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department.

As special events coordinator, Bishop will be the city's liaison with organizations in the valley that sponsor festivals, regional sports tournaments, parades and other organized celebrations.

The salary range for the full-time job is $32,000 to $47,000 annually.

"She'll be working with the Special Events Committee, researching Roanoke's special events needs, and planning, implementing and evaluating the best special events possible for the city of Roanoke," said Vic Garber, superintendent of recreation for the city department.

A member of the Community Foundation's board said Bishop will be missed.

"She contributed to the growth of the foundation and was an asset to the board," said Lindsay West, the Community Foundation's president.

Formed in 1994, the Community Foundation is a nonprofit philanthropic organization that administers funds or trusts endowed by donors for public benefit.

It targets an array of causes - including health, human services, cultural, educational and artistic projects - that might not be served by traditional charities.

Bishop had served as executive director since June. During her tenure, West said, the organization established an office at New River Community College and enhanced its endowments.

West said the search for a new director will begin immediately.

Anyone interested in applying for the position may contact her at 552-2023, vice president Bill Dawson at 674-4327 or mail a letter and resume to 607 Giles Road, Blacksburg 24060.
