BELL, William Gordon Jr., 72, of Roanoke, died Friday, April 11, 1997. He was former vice president of coal transportation with American Electric Power Company. Surviving are a daughter, Carol Bell Chappell and husband, R. Don, and a son, William G. Bell III, all of Roanoke; grandchildren, Laurie Ellen Nelson of Tappahannock, and Elizabeth Anne Nelson and Karen Aylette Chappell of Blacksburg, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday. The remains will be moved to the Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville, Md., where services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. BOYD, Gracie Rhodes, 83, Bassett, died Saturday, April 12, 1997 at her home. She was born March 10, 1914 in Henry Co. to the late Rufus Rhodes and Mattie W ray Rhodes, who survives. Mrs. Boyd had been attending Victory Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, William Isaac Boyd of the home; three daughters, Maybelle B. Peters, Eden, N.C., Eva B. Phelps, Virginia Beach, Louise B. Fant, Prosperity, S.C.; two sons, Allen A. Boyd, Laurel Park, James W. Boyd, Bassett; her mother, Mattie Wray Rhodes, Virginia Beach; three sisters, Gladys R. Boyd, Martinsville, Ruby R. Frye, Portsmouth, Frances Wallman, Newport News; two brothers, R.C. Rhodes, Martinsville, Elmer Rhodes, Martinsville; 24 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren. BRANCH, Peggy Jean Ewing, 64, of 104 Powtan Drive, Lynchburg, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Thomas William Branch. Mrs. Branch was born December 15, 1932, in Lynchburg, a daug hter of the late David W. (``Bruce"") Ewing and Mary Martin Ewing. She retired from Montague-Betts Company and was a member of Fairview Rebekah Lodge #52 and Euclid Christian Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Hatcher. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Geary Ray Powell, and one granddaughter, Tammy Marie Johnson, both of Lynchburg; two sisters, Della Pendleton of Lynchburg and Lucille Blanks and her husband, Alvin of Greensboro, N.C., and one brother-in-law, Preston Hatcher Sr. of Lynchburg. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by Dr. Edward Parrish III. INGRAM, Lillian Bryant, 94, formerly of 301 Rives Rd., Martinsville, Va., died Friday, April 11, 1997 at Kinggrant Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Posey E. Ingram, her father, William Pickney, mother Elizabeth Moran Bryant. Both Dr. Posey E. Ingram and Dr. Lillian Bryant Ingram were Chiropractic Pioneers in the Martinsville and Henry County Communities. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Martinsville. She graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic. She is survived by three sons, James Rudolph Ingram of Martinsville; Dr. Philip B. Ingram of Winston Salem, N.C. and Joseph E. Ingram of Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Jacqueline Wagner of Acworth, Ga.; Patricia Olenchak of Columbia, S.C.; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. SEALS, Dred E., of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997. Born in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the only son of the late Edward Seals and Susie Beattie Seals. He graduated from Genoa High School, Bluefield, W.Va., and was also a graduate of J. L. Loving School of Design and Tailoring. He was a veteran of World War II, and received several medals including the Purple Heart. He was a former employee of Norfolk and Western Railway, and retired from Burroughs Company of Roanoke. He was a member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Disabled American Veterans and VFW Chapter of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Whitten Seals. He is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mrs. Geraldine Freeman of Bluefield, W.Va., and Mrs. Margaret Ragland and her husband, Arben Rudolph Ragland of Columbus, Ohio; two nieces, Floris M. Houston and her husband, Larry D. Houston of Abingdon, and Anitra Coates Toles of Columbus, Ohio; great-nephews, including Eddie Moore and Robert H. Houston; great-nieces, Vanessa F. Houston of Roanoke and Genevra Moore of Columbus, Ohio, and great-great nieces and great-great-nephews, Latasia Coates, Christopher Coates, Nina Coates, Kellin Kincaid and Leandra Moore. Dr. Smith served as pastor of the Chrisitiansburg Presbyterian Church from 1946 until his retirement in 1967. She was the widow of Eugene Stevens, a lifelong membe r of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, where she was church historian, and an active member of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her sisters, Mary P. Shorter, Buchanan and Cornelia P. Siler, Natural Bridge; niece, Peggy S. Woodson; nephew, John P. WAMPLER, Susanne Stanley, born May 1, 1932, passed away Friday, April 11, 1997. She was a resident of St. Simons Island, Ga. She formerly lived in Galax and Pulaski, Va. WELLS, Denny James, (``Don""), 83, of 211 Twelfth Street, S.W., Roanoke, died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Preston Wells. Born in Henry County on February 14, 1914, he was a son of the late David Wells Sr. and the late Mrs. Jenny Hairston Wells. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Reynolds. He retired from J. D. Bassett Furniture Company with 45 years of service, and had been a resident of Roanoke for two years. Mr. Wells is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Georgia Hairston of Martinsville, and Mrs. Shirley Reynolds, Mrs. Bonnie Powell and Ms. Alberta Wells, all of Roanoke; three sons, Harry Wells and Bobby Well, both of Martinsville, and James Wells of Bassett; four brothers, Kit Wells, Dave Wells Jr. and Jessie Wells, all of Bassett, and Curtis Wells of Richmond; 25 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hairston Funeral Home Chapel in Martinsville, with Bishop Loretta Dillard officiating. Interment will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
