The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 were closed Sunday night on Afton Mountain by a rock slide, police said.
No one was injured when two boulders fell onto the interstate, one in each lane, about 7:15 p.m.
A geologist from the Virginia Department of Transportation will assess the situation before any traffic lanes are reopened, said Sgt. Dan Blake of the Albemarle County Police Department.
Westbound motorists were being rerouted onto U.S. 250 at Crozet, then back onto I-64 at Waynesboro.
Two weeks ago, another slide on the mountain delayed traffic. Highway officials said that one probably was caused by a combination of high winds and repeated freezes and thaws.
