COALE, Marian Phillips, 91, of Forest Hill, Md., died at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, Shawsville, Va., on Sunday, April 13, 1997. Born in Forest Hill, she was the daughter of the late Albert McVey Phillips and Annie E. Poteet. She was the wife of the late Charles Webster Coale Sr. She graduated from Jarrettsville High School, Jarrettsville, Md. in the Class of 1922. She served as a substitute teacher in Harford County during the 20s. She worked at home and cared for her family during her adult life. She is survived by two sons, Charles Webster Coale Jr., Blacksburg and Richard McVey Coale, Forest Hill, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Ellen Kirby Coale, Blacksburg; and four grandchildren, Marjorie Coale Lawson and grandson-in-law, Thomas Cary Lawson III, Toano, Va., Stephen Allan Coale, Santa Fe, N.M., Roger Martin Coale, Vienna, James William Coale, Charlotte, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas Cary Lawson IV and Zachariah Phillips Lawson, Toano. Marian was one of three sisters, Eleanor Phillips Greenland Pyle (deceased) and Ozella Phillips Hamilton, Havre de Grace, Md.; and two nieces, Dorothy Greenland Gerber, Aberdeen, Md., Ruth Hamilton Hummer, Shiremanstown, Penn.; and one nephew, Charles H. Hamilton Jr., Havre de Grace, Md. Marian had many Phillips cousins current ly residing in Harford County Md. Pallbearers will be James W. Coale, Roger M. Coale, Charles H. Hamilton Jr., Emmitt O. Kelly Jr., Thomas C. Lawson III, F. Sheffield Phillips, and Robert L. Spielman. Howard Phillips will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Service will be conducted at the William Watters United Methodist Church, 1452 Jarrettsville Road, Jarrettsville, Md. 21084 at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 1997 by the Rev. Susan B. Thomas-Azud. Interment will be in the William Watters Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the William Watters Church on Tuesday, April 15, 1997 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Arrangements by Kurtz Funeral Home. COOPER, Clarence Edward, 77, of Blacksburg, formerly of Newport, died at his home Saturday, April 12, 1997. Born in Newport on July 17, 1919 he was a son of the late Isreal and Celia Lang Cooper. Surviving are one daughter, Sy lvia and her husband, Randy Rader of Shawsville; five sons and their wives, Winston and Mary Cooper of Narrows, Carl and Donna Cooper of Newport, Benny Cooper of Narrows, Roger and Sharon Cooper of Blacksburg, Curtis and Cheryl Cooper of Narrows; five grandsons; three granddaughters; one great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1997 in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke. CORVIN, Osborne P., 91, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in Wythe County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Groseclose Corvin, and a grandson, Roger Corvin. He is survived by two sons, Lawrence C. Corvin of Wytheville and James Douglas Groseclose of Fairfax, Vt.; a sister, Stella Etter of Wytheville; a brother, Joe Corvin of Rural Retreat; eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. CRAIGHEAD, George O., departed this life on Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Roanoke. He was a son of the late Bruce and Alma B. Craighead. He is survived by one daughter, Crystal Brown; one grandchild; four sisters, Mrs. Mary C. Parker, Mrs. Gaynell C. Flood and Mrs. Betty C. Holland, all of Bedford, and Mrs. Elle n C. DAVIS, Harold Kinley, of Roxboro, N.C., died Saturday, April 12, 1997 at the Rose Manor Nursing Home. He was a native of Washington County and was retired fromthe Norfolk Southern Railroad. FOLEY, Helen Jane, 83, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, April 13, 1997 in a local hospital. She was a loyal member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Green Foley and one son, Raymond Foley. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Edgar Tosh, Rocky Mount; one son and daughter-in-law, Alvin and Virginia Foley, Rocky Mou nt; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other family members. HANKLEY, Clarice Peery, 95, of Glade Spring, died Friday, April 11, 1997. She was born in Fleet, Va., and had lived in Arlington before moving back to Glade Spring, Va. after her retirement. She was an employee of the National Security Agency until h er retirement and a graduate of the Martha Washington College. She was a member of the Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church. She is survived by one nephew, John Richard Peery, Glade Spring; three nieces, Mary Louise Peery, Washington D.C., Mrs. Elliot (Kristen) Vesell, Hershey, Penn., Cynthia Peery, Toano, Va.; and two great-nieces. HUDSON, Nell Morrison, 97, of Ceres, died Saturday evening, April 12, 1997, at Kegley Manor in Bastian. She was a graduate of Radford and James Madison Colleges, and had done graduate work at Columbia University in New York City. She was a member of Wilderness Road Chapter of D.A.R., Sharon Presbyterian Church, Bland County W.O.C. and Bland County Teachers Association. She had taught school in Bland, Wythe and Tazewell Counties, and in Clarksville, Md. She also was a music teacher and retired after 52 years of service. She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. William H. Edmonson of Harrisonburg and Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Fairly of Richmond; one nephew, Bennett F. Adair Jr. of Richmond, and a special friend and caretaker, Clayton Lambert of Ceres. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Sharon Presbyterian Church, with interment to follow in the Sharon Lutheran Church cemetery in Ceres. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Sharon Lutheran Cemetery Fund. MUNSEY, Sarah Woods, 76, of Salem, passed away Saturday, April 12, 1997. She was a Roanoke area resident all of her life, and was a self-employed beautician. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, and was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Munsey. Surviving are nine nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, with the Rev. Thomas Clay officiating. PATTERSON, Lucy Mae Muse, 102, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, Apr il 11, 1997. She was the oldest member of Hill Street Baptist Church. She was the mother of the church and sang in the Senior Choir for more than 70 years. Mrs. Patterson was a dedicated member of the Flower Club for over 60 years and one of the first members of the Missionary Society of Hill Street. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie L. Patterson and one son, James A. Patterson. Survivors include one brother, Raymond Muse Sr., Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Sadie Muse, Roanoke, Alzie Johnson, Mansfield, Ohio, Virginia Tuning and Gracie McGee both of Rocky Mount, Hattie Pickard, Roanoke; one brother-in-law, William M. Patterson, Rocky Mount; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Hill Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Johnny R. Stone will officiate with the interment in the Patterson Family Cemetery, Franklin Co. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. PERDUE, Ella Marie, 71, of Salem, died Saturday, April 12 ,1997, in a Roanoke hospital. She is survived by her husband, Thomas G. (``Buddy"") Perdue; one daughter, Janet Galbraith of Roanoke; three sons, Billy McDaniel and Jack McDaniel of Salem and Jerry McDaniel of Lynchburg; six stepchildren; 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. RAKES, Alice M., 69, of Shawsville, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, in a Salem hospital . She was the widow of Failous Mason Rakes, and also was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Alma Main, and a brother, Elmon L. Main. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Rakes Thompson of Christiansburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Morris and Alice Rakes of Shawsville; five grandchildren, Troy, Donna, Missy, Rickey and Danielle; four great-grandchildren, Jessie, Taylor, Destiny and Callie; four brothers, Walter A. Main of Roanoke, James M. Main of Salem, Lloyd J. Main of Shawsville and Harold D. Main of Radford, and two sisters, Virgie Sweeney of Salem and Martha Fitzwater of Elliston. SCHAEFFER, John Lewis, 56, of Galax, died Saturday, April 12, 1997 in Twin County Regional Hospital. He was born in Port Clinton, Penn., on June 21, 1940 to Franklin Robert Schaeffer and Dorothy Emerich Schaeffer. He is survived by his wife, Sadie Combs Schaeffer of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael John and Lisa Smith Schaeffer, Galax, Randy Lewis Schaeffer, Galax; one sister, Elaine Schaeffer, Galax; two brothers, Ken Schaeffer, G alax and Bobby Schaeffer, Sebring, Fla. SEALS, Dred E., of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997. Born in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the only son of the late Edward Seals and Susie Beattie Seals. He graduated from Genoa High School, Bluefield, W.Va., and was also a graduate of J. L. Loving School of Design and Tailoring. He was a veteran of World War II, and received several medals including the Purple Heart. He was a former employee of Norfolk and Western Railway, and retired from Burroughs Company of Roanoke. He was a member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Disabled American Veterans and VFW Chapter of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Whitten Seals. He is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mrs. Geraldine Freeman of Bluefield, W.Va., and Mrs. Margaret Ragland and her husband, Arben Rudolph Ragland of Columbus, Ohio; two nieces, Floris M. Houston and her husband, Larry D. Houston of Abingdon, and Anitra Coates Toles of Columbus, Ohio; one nephew, Robert E. Moore and his wife, Jacqueline T. Moore of Columbus, Ohio; great-nephews, including Eddie Moore of Greensboro, N.C., and Robert B. Houston; great-nieces, Vanessa F. Houston of Roanoke and Genevra Moore of Columbus, Ohio, and great-great nieces and great-great-nephews, Latasia Coates, Christopher Coates, Nina Coates, Kellin Kincaid and Leandra Moore. SIMPSON, Lena Fringer, 85, of Roanoke, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at her home. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church, and was the widow of Charles Henry Fringer and R. Blair Simpson. She was retired from American Viscose Corporation. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Howard L. and Elaine R. Fringer of Bassett; a grandson, Les Fringer of Richmond, and three b rothers, Ray Layman, Woodie Layman and Chester Layman, all of Buchanan. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Troy E. Mays officiating. Burial will follow in Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. SMITH, Roy William, 51, of Lexington, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at his residence. Mr. Smith was born on July 7, 1945, in Lexington, and was the son of Virginia Wilborn Smith of Lexington and the late Roy Everett Smith. Roy was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church, past member of the Masonic Lodge and worked as superintendent of Parks and Recreation and Cemetery Maintenance for the City of Lexington. He joined the Lexington Lifesaving and First Aid Crew in 1966, was Captain in 1968, and Training Officer from 1972 to 1974, while serving as the District I Vice President from 1973 to 1974. He was Captain from 1975 to 1979, and again from 1984 to the present. He had been awarded the Crew Member of the Year for six different years, was an EMT, EMT Shock Trauma, and a Vehicle Extrication Instructor. He also was affiliated with the SWAB Wagon Company of Elizabethville, Pa. In addition to his mother, Roy is survived by his wife, Brenda Craft Smith of Lexington; one son, Mark Lynwood Smith of Lexington; a twin sister, Patricia L. Blaesing of Vienna; two grandchildren, Mark Anthony Smith and Johnathon William Smith, and a nephew, Jason E. Blaesing. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1997, from the Lexington Lifesaving and First Aid Crew Building, with the Rev. Barton L. Hellmuth and the Rev. L.
