HYLER LEADS TECH TO A-10 GOLF CROWN

Virginia Tech freshman Brad Hyler won the individual title, and the Hokies collected their second consecutive team crown on Sunday at the Atlantic 10 Conference Golf Championships at Southpointe Country Club in Canonsburg, Pa.

Hyler, who was named the league's Rookie of the Year, shot a 78 in the third round for a total of 217. He finished three strokes ahead of teammate Robby Rasmussen. The pair was joined by Tech's Kennedy Cliff on the all-conference team.

The Hokies fired a 296 on Sunday, and completed the event with an 875 total. Tech finished a tournament-record 36 shots ahead of second-place Xavier.

The Hokies' Jay Hardwick was named the A-10 Coach of the Year.

Roanoke Valley 4-ball: Scott Hunter and Andy Miller birdied on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the fourth annual Roanoke Valley Four Ball Championship at Hunting Hills Country Club.

Hunter and Miller shot a 70 and beat the team of Tony Good of Richmond and David Passerell of Charlottesville.

BASEBALL

Anderson goes the distance

Jason Anderson (Glenvar High School) pitched a complete-game five-hitter to lead Radford to an 8-2 victory as the Highlanders split a Big South Conference doubleheader with Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C.

Radford (19-21 overall, 6-6 conference) lost the nightcap 7-0, but took the weekend series two games to one with a 16-8 victory Saturday night.

In Sunday's first game, Jim Thomas was 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Highlanders' offense.

In the nightcap, Steve Bagby went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Brendan Dougherty added a bases-loaded double to drive in three for the Chanticleers (15-22, 2-11).

Virginia Tech: Xavier's Bill Fish hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Musketeers to a 9-7 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Hokies in Atlantic 10 action in Cincinnati.

Xavier (20-19, 7-2) held off Tech 4-3 in the seven-inning opener. The Hokies (20-20, 7-5) had solo home runs from Matt Reynolds (William Byrd), who went 3-for-3 in the second game, and Ryan Brittle (Radford).

Ferrum: Methodist College (23-6, 7-4), ranked 11th in NCAA Division III, ripped Panthers pitching for 24 hits and 22 runs as the Monarchs took both games of a Dixie Conference doubleheader 11-4 and 11-3 in Fayetteville, N.C.

Junior Patrick Daly went 4-for-8 with two home runs and three RBI for 17th-ranked Ferrum (22-6, 7-3).

Washington and Lee: Junior center fielder Todd Ellingson's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Generals (8-11) to a 6-5 victory over St.Mary's, Md., in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader in Lexington.

St.Mary's (11-14) won the first game 11-7 as the visitors scored six runs in the second inning with the help of four W&L errors.

VMI: East Tennessee State (19-17, 11-8) collected 34 hits, including eight home runs, as the Buccaneers swept a Southern Conference doubleheader from the Keydets 20-14 and 13-5 in Lexington.

Ben Bradford led VMI (12-28, 6-10) with a homer and three RBI in game two.

LACROSSE

Jenkins leads W&L rout

Senior attackman Ande Jenkins surpassed the 200-point mark for his career as sixth-ranked Washington and Lee (8-1) routed Goucher 29-5 in Towson, Md.

Jenkins, who is third on the Generals' all-time scoring list with 203 points, had seven goals and three assists against the Gophers (6-6).

Washington and Lee women: Senior goalie Brooke Glenn set a school record with 31 saves, but that still wasn't enough to keep top-ranked College of New Jersey (8-0) from registering its 96th consecutive victory with an 8-6 triumph over the Generals in Ewing Township, N.J.

W&L junior Whitney Parker had two goals for the ninth-ranked Generals (10-2).

Hollins: Carolyn Roth scored a career-high eight goals to lead Lynchburg (5-6, 3-2) to an 18-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Hollins (3-9, 1-6) in Lynchburg.

SOFTBALL

Cummings leads Ferrum

Traci Cummings (Alleghany) went 4-for-7 with a triple and two runs scored as Ferrum split a Dixie Conference doubleheader with Averett. The Cougars won the opening game 4-2, and the Panthers took the second game 15-2.

Roanoke: Virginia Wesleyan clinched the regular-season ODAC crown as the Marlins swept Roanoke 5-0 and 6-5.

Radford: Radford split a pair of Big South games with Towson State, winning 6-3 and losing 9-8.
