Christmas in April of Bedford Inc. plans to refurbish homes of poor, elderly and disabled people in the Bedford area on April 26.

Partners in Parenting
Partners in Parenting invites the public to attend a panel discussion about youth and body image called "In the Mirror."
The free seminar will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Northside Middle School. Free babysitting will be provided.

Heritage conference
The Southern League of Virginia will conduct its second annual Southern Heritage Conference on Saturday at the Roanoker restaurant.
The conference will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by the speakers at 12:30 p.m.

The Southwestern Virginia Genealogical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the main auditorium of the Roanoke City Library on Jefferson Street.

Storytelling festival
"Tell It In The Mountains," Asheville, N.C.'s sixth annual celebration of storytelling, will be held May 2-4.
Storytellers from all over the country will be on hand throughout the weekend, and the downtown has lots of shops and restaurants to explore.

Bedford read-a-thon
The Friends of the Bedford Public Library will host a read-a-thon from 12:15-12:45 p.m. on Wednesday in the Bedford Room of the central library.
Several Bedford residents will read short passages from their favorite works of literature.
Audience members are encouraged to bring lunch, and the Friends will provide beverages.

Tap auditions
Showtimers is looking for adults for the tap-dancing comedy "Stepping Out."
Auditions will be held 2-5 p.m. April 19 and 6-9 p.m. April 20 at the Showtimers Studio on McVitty Road across from Allstate Insurance.
Nine adult women, ages 20-50s, and one adult male are needed for this contemporary comedy about a class of would-be tap dancers taught by a chorus girl.
Hopefuls will read from the script and are asked to dress comfortably. They may also perform a prepared one-minute monologue.
The auditions are open to all adults, and no previous experience is required.
The play will be performed Thursday through Saturday, June 5-22.
Adopt-a-Highway cleanup
Residents interested in helping Adopt-a-Highway volunteers clean up area roadways on Saturday as part of Operation Spruce-up are asked to contact the local Virginia Department of Transportation office at 387-5488 or (800) PRIDE VA.
Acting classes
Mill Mountain Theatre will offer acting classes for adults on eight consecutive Monday nights beginning June 9.
The Acting Lab filled up quickly last year, so no applications will be accepted before 10 a.m. on May 3. The class is limited to 20 people.
No audition or previous theatre experience is required. All classes will be held at Mill Mountain Theatre in rehearsal hall B. The fee is $150, and scholarships are available.
The Audition Workshop, which will be held in September, will be another opportunity for adults to continue their study of acting within the context of the audition process. Priority for registration will be given to alumni of the 1996 and 1997 Acting Lab classes.
