DUCK POND FESTIVAL CELEBRATES CHILDREN

On Saturday, children and their parents will find a variety of entertainment at Virginia Tech's ever popular pond.

A family "extravaganza" featuring music, face painting, crafts and those ever popular ducks will be held at the Virginia Tech Duck Pond Saturday.

The Duck Pond Extravaganza has become an annual event, offering a variety of free activities for families. Organizers say the event is their way of celebrating children and showing how important children are to the New River Valley.

Storytelling, juggling, music and crafts are all planned for the day. Other favorites with children, including firetrucks and McGruff the Crime Dog, will be there. Many area child-care centers will also have booths.

The extravaganza begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch.

The event is sponsored by the New River Valley and Virginia Tech Associations for the Education of Young Children to celebrate the Week of the Young Child, April 13-19.

The theme of this year's celebration is "Early years are learning years ... make them count!" During the week one day is set aside as "worthy wage day" to emphasize the need for good wages for child care providers.
