ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TAKE THE STAGE

Several children at Margaret Beeks Elementary School will have a chance to take the stage and show off their singing skills with professional opera singers today in two performances at the Blacksburg school.

The classic fairy tale opera "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" will be performed at Beeks today at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. as part of a Virginia Opera Company production.

Members of the opera will play the roles of the queen, Snow White, the prime minister, huntsman and the prince.

But those plum roles of the dwarfs will be sung by fourth- and fifth-graders from the school. The children are Jessica Alderman, Trent Angelucci, Caitlin Baird, Nick Grimes, Jocy Guynn, Shane McKelvy, Hayley Reynolds and Ben Smoot.

The Virginia Opera performers worked in residency with the students to prepare for their performance on Monday afternoon. Before Monday's dress rehearsal, the children practiced their singing parts with their music teacher.

Other students involved in the production are technical assistants Ella Camburnbeck and Julisia Banach; and poster staff members Amanda Reinholtz, Kirsten Hite, Carson Davis, Oliver Chapman and Adam Hodge.

Several students from Community Christian Academy in Christiansburg participated in three separate competitions of the Association of Christian Schools International. Listed below are the names of students who participated and won awards:

District Writing Festival: Jeffrey Skiles, red ribbon winner; Katie Brown, Joshua Skiles, David Lookabill, Joshua Goodhart and Monica Miles, all white ribbon winners. Barry Keller, Ashley Cole and Bethany Kitts participated in the writing festival.
