Pat Sharp has resigned as the Carroll County boys' basketball coach, becoming the fifth Timesland boys' basketball coach to leave his position this spring.
Sharp coached the Cavaliers for seven years and compiled a 61-101 record. His 1991 team made the Group AA tournament.
The decision to resign was Sharp's despite a 5-16 mark this past winter. Carroll County was playing its first season in the Southwest District.
``I didn't think the program was going in the direction it needed to go,'' Sharp said. ``We haven't been real successful the last couple of years. I wasn't doing an adequate job. It was time for a change.''
Sharp, 35, said he will continue to teach and coach cross country at Carroll County.
``Basketball was my one love,'' said Sharp, who was an outstanding player at the Hillsville school before he played for Western Carolina in the Southern Conference.
``There comes a time when you're not doing the job that it's time to let someone else have a shot. I don't know that I'll get back into [coaching] basketball. We'll just have to wait and see.''
Carroll County principal Harold Golding said he wasn't sure when the replacement process would start, but that he hopes Sharp stays on as a teacher and helps the school in another area as a coach.
LIBERTY PARADE: There will be a parade at 5:30 p.m. Thursday from the Bedford Middle School and going downtown to honor the Minutemen for winning their second consecutive Group AA boys' basketball title.
Ceremonies will be conducted on the conclusion of the parade.
OTHER JOBS: According to several sources, William Campbell head coach Pat Paye and Northside assistant coach Doug Day appear to be the leading candidates for the boys' basketball opening at Pulaski County.
Day was an All-Timesland player at Blacksburg and a standout at Radford University. He has been a Vikings assistant for three years.
Paye is also involved with some other jobs, including a pair of out-of-state positions and the vacancy at Franklin County.
The leading candidate at Galax to follow veteran coach Ken Ross appears to be assistant Verl Brown. Brown was a first-year coach this past fall for the girls' team. The Maroon Tide went 16-9 in a season that ended with a trip to the Region C tournament.
OVERLOOKED: In trying to put together the All-Timesland and Sizzlin' Sophomore lists, it seems that an athlete slips through unnoticed.
Roanoke Valley Christian guard Brad Hutchins averaged a little more than 20 points a game and should have been one of the boys' Sizzlin' Sophomores.
In combing the rosters, it slipped by that Hutchins was a sophomore instead of being an upperclassman. However, he is the top sophomore scorer in Timesland and should be on the list as a Sizzlin' Sophomore, even if belatedly mentioned.
Carroll County's Chelsie Stoneman also should have been mentioned as one of the Sizzlin' Sophomore girls' players to watch. Though she averaged only 8.5 points a game, the 6-foot-1 senior led Timesland fall rebounding with 13.2 a game. For the sophomore boys to watch, Bland's Heath Puckett should have been listed after he posted a 10.7 scoring average.
