LOCAL BOXERS TAKE SWINGS, FIND GOLD

Four boxers who train at the Roanoke City Boxing Association's gym won state Golden Gloves titles this past weekend.

The boxers competed in the 1997 Virginia Golden Gloves and third annual ``Sweet Pea'' Whitaker Invitational in Norfolk.

Also, RCBA 125-pounder David Brock beat last year's national champion Roy Blanko en route to the National Collegiate Championship in Annapolis, Md. Brock knocked out David Fields of Lock Haven, Pa., in the title bout.

Mark Bradley Minter (132 pounds) and Henry ``Looney'' Cooper (126 pounds) mowed down the competition on Friday to secure their Golden Glove championships.

The other two winners were brothers - Orencio and Enrique Maldonado of Southeast Roanoke. Orencio, after only five weeks of training in the Roanoke gym, outpointed Mike McDonald of Alexandria. Enrique won when James Jones of Richmond refused to fight.

Other local fighters Jon Nic Leonard, Brian Fleshman and Shawn Webb earned silver medals.

Varney 14th in Big South

Glenvar High School graduate Nick Varney, who now plays at North Carolina-Greensboro, is tied for 14th after two rounds of the Big South Conference golf tournament in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Coastal Carolina leads both the men's and women's events, while Radford is last in both. Radford's top men's scorer was Eddie Kurpiel, who was tied for 17th with a two-round total of 157. Northside graduate Brian Hill was tied for 27th for Radford.

The final round is today.

Roanoke College honors: Lisa Franzino was named Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year and Chris Davin and Jason Bishop were honored as the school's Outstanding Male Athletes of the Year.

Franzino was a captain on the women's soccer and lacrosse teams. She earned All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honors with both teams and ranks high on many of the sports' all-time lists.

Davin, a defenseman on the No. 3 men's lacrosse team, was the 1996 ODAC player of the year. He has 188 career ground balls to his credit.

Bishop, a guard on the men's basketball team, finished his career with 1,422 points and a school-record 335 steals. Bishop was the 1997 ODAC player of the year and helped the Maroons to NCAA tournament berths each of his four seasons.

The athletic department also presented the Michael R. Murphy and the Paul W. Rice Awards to Adam Jackson and Bryan Wagaman, respectively. The Murphy award recognizes a student-athlete who demonstrates extraordinary perseverance at college. Jackson is a native Australian who put himself through college and played lacrosse.

The Rice award goes to a student-athlete who made a significant contribution to student life at Roanoke. Wagaman, a co-captain of the men's tennis team, was involved in numerous activities at the school.
