The Avalanche rallies from a two-run deficit, but reliever Luis Colmenares can't shut down Wilmington.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks did about all they could to lose to the Salem Avalanche on Monday night, but it wasn't enough.
The Blue Rocks (6-5) beat the Avalanche 3-2 despite committing five errors in the span of three innings and leaving nine men on base. Salem stranded eight men, right at its season average, which leads the Carolina League.
Carlos Beltran, who had one at-bat in Wilmington's four-game series this past week in Salem, drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Salem (3-8) scored its first run in the fifth as Rod Bair reached on an error by first baseman Gary Coffee, and center fielder Garrett Neubart brought him home with a single. Bair drove in the Avalanche's other run in the top of the sixth with a single to center that scored left fielder David Feuerstein from second.
Salem sends Scott Randall, who helped no-hit the Blue Rocks this past Thursday, to the mound at 7:05 tonight in the third game of the series. Wilmington (6-5) counters with Todd Thorne. NOTE: please see microfilm for scores.
