Capstar also owns or is buying WYYD, WROV, WJJS/WJJX and WRDJ/WLDJ in the Roanoke- Lynchburg market.
Yet another radio station in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market will come under the ownership of Texas-based Capstar Broadcasting Partners under a deal announced Monday.
WJLM (93.5 FM) - better known as J-93 - is being sold by Lloyd Gochenour, who put the station on the air on March 5, 1969.
The $3.1 million sale is expected to be completed by May1.
Gochenour, who is a Christian minister, said he will keep the station's sister operation, WRIS (1410 AM), which broadcasts religious programming.
Capstar - formed just eight months ago - has quickly become the dominant owner of radio stations operating in the nation's medium-sized markets, including 101st-ranked Roanoke-Lynchburg. The company holds more than 120 stations.
It owns or is in the process of buying seven other stations in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market, including perennially top-rated WYYD (107.9 FM), a country-music station. The others are rock 'n' roll WROV (96.3 FM and 1240 AM), urban-contemporary WJJS/WJJX (1320 AM, 106.1/101.7 FM), and oldies WRDJ/WLDJ (104.9/102.7).
Though WYYD is the overall ratings winner in the market, its strength has been based on its absolute dominance of listeners on the Lynchburg side of the market.
J-93, a relatively low-power station, has long been the dominant country-music FM station on the Roanoke side of the market.
Gochenour said he intends to use $1million of the sale proceeds to start a Christian-based charitable trust.
