About ``Is Virginia soon to be on the road again?'' April 7:
From GEORGE A. MILAN, Roanoke
More than likely we need an increase in the tax rate. But I also believe trucks that run our interstates, and do more damage than other vehicles, should be paying more than other vehicles.
About ``A day-care trip worth taking in the valley,'' April 8:
From OLGA HUNT, Roanoke
You're right on target. I would like to be involved and take the tour myself.
About ``Preventing domestic violence,'' April 10:
From CINDY McLEAREN, Troutville
Until we find a way in society to ensure that every child is brought up in a loving, supportive family, domestic violence and similar problems will continue. Parent training should be required in every high school to ensure that as many children as possible are brought up with healthy levels of self-esteem. If the women involved in violent situations had the positive self-regard that they should have developed as children, they wouldn't allow themselves to be involved in violent relationships.
About ``A plain view of Mill Mountain,'' April 12:
From CARL WHITE, Roanoke
Ralph Smith is correct. A small amount of commercial development on the mountain would not be a sin, as you seem to think. There are hundreds of thousands of natural acres in Western Virginia, and one small restaurant would not be critical.
From JULIA KELLY, Roanoke
Let's leave Mill Mountain as it, without further man-made developments.
From SARA LOU HANCOCK, Roanoke
I think it would be wonderful to have a nice restaurant up there where people can look out over the city. This is a big drawing card in a lot of other cities around the world, to be up high and be able to look out over the city.
From CORBIN WELLFORD, Smith Mountain Lake
I really agree with Ralph Smith. I think a Peaks of Otter-type facility that blends in with the natural habitat would be a real asset to the community. I don't think it would detract for any of the hikers or people looking up at the star.
From GILLIAM LEWIS, Roanoke:
I would like the tram returned to Mill Mountain. A rotating restaurant would bring pleasure to many people, and one should be added to the mountain.
From O. HALSEY HILL, Roanoke
You've finally gotten the message: The mountain itself, plain and simple, is the attraction.
From MARJORIE SMITHEY, Roanoke
I disagree. We do need a family restaurant with a panorama view. This will not interfere with the hikers, bikers, deer, turkeys or skunks.
From MARY LUCILLE DARDEN, Salem
I think it would be wonderful to put back the Mill Mountain trolley car. There should be a small fee to ride the trolley, but parking on the mountain should be free. Also, put a restaurant up there and a hotel like there used to be.
