ROANOKE WINS AGAIN IN LACROSSE

A second-quarter outburst was more than enough for the Roanoke men's lacrosse team Tuesday. The Maroons, ranked third in Division III, scored six straight goals to break open an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match at Randolph-Macon on the way to a 12-4 victory in Ashland.

The Maroons (7-2, 5-0) led 8-1 by halftime. Pacing the ODAC leaders were Jeff Jones with six goals and Paul Baly with four. Bobby Vallario had two assists and Chris Gordon had 18 saves.

R-MC is 6-4, 1-2.

In other lacrosse:

Tech women: Virginia Tech's women's team lost 11-4 at Duke (5-7).

Amy Mantooth led the Hokies (3-10) with two goals.

BASEBALL

Hokies lose by a run

Virginia Tech's late rally wasn't enough to combat the complete-game pitching performance by James Madison's Rich Rodarmel in a 7-6 JMU victory in Blacksburg.

Tech (20-21) cut JMU's lead to one in the eighth on a three-run home run by Matt Reynolds (William Byrd), but Rodarmel, who allowed 14 hits, finished off the Hokies in the ninth. JMU (23-18) staked Rodarmel to a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Chad Foutz (Franklin County) was 4-for-5 for the Hokies.

W&L: Bridgewater used eight hits and eight walks to defeat Washington & Lee 10-7 in an ODAC game in Bridgewater.

W&L (8-12, 3-4) had 11 hits to eight for Bridgewater (12-18, 8-6) as Ticker Bixby, Patrick Hall, Todd Ellington and Russell Wrenn had two hits apiece.

SOFTBALL

Fletcher leads Radford

Radford pitcher Sheree Fletcher saved the first game and won the second as the Highlanders swept a doubleheader at Virginia Tech.

Radford (22-26) won the first game 12-9 with 14 hits. Chassity Chronick led the Highlanders with three hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBI. Melissa Pikel also had three hits and a solo homer. Fletcher pitched the last two innings.

Michelle Meadows led Tech with a three-run homer, her fourth of the season.

Fletcher (10-14) went the distance for a 3-0 victory in the second game. She held Tech (18-25) to two hits.
