New-car registrations in the Roanoke Valley last month fell short of the mark set in March 1996, but for the first quarter they are ahead of last year. The number of new cars so far this year is 1,761, compared with 1,624 last year, because of higher sales in January. Of last month's new cars, 279 were registered in Roanoke, 224 in Roanoke County and 101 in Salem.
