PLACES TO GO

Circus comes to town

Laaadies and gentlemen! May I direct your attention to the man on the flying trapeze or to the perch-pole performers or to the 30 tons of wrinkled pachyderms. The Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus troops into the New River Valley Fairgrounds Wednesday and April 24 and to the Salem Civic Center April 25-26.

Tent-raising:

Wednesday in New River and April 25 in Salem, dawn to 10 a.m.

By 50 men and a team of elephants.

Why get up so early? It's the world's largest circus tent - bigger than a football field.

Tickets are available at the New River Valley Mall and Kroger stores and on the midway. Free kids' tickets are available in some local stores. Call 375-3004 (Salem).

Garden Week homes tour

The windows will be sparkling and the petals will be polished for the Roanoke Tour of Homes and Gardens Saturday in the Hunting Hills area. Six residences will be featured. Continuous bus service runs from Hunting Hills Country Club.

Buy block tickets at the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs, the country club or at tour homes. Call 343-4519 for details.

Brentano Quartet at Roanoke College

Some scholars believe Antonie Brentano was Beethoven's mysterious ``immortal beloved,'' the recipient of his famous love confession.

Anyway, the Brentano String Quartet will make sweet music tonight at 8 p.m. in Roanoke College's Olin Theater. The Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society is host to this pretty new but already national award-winning group. The music of Mozart, Golijov and Mendelssohn are on the program.

Call 375-2333 (1-4 p.m.) or show up at the box office a half hour before the concert for tickets.

Tenor not just for opera fans

Sometimes a voice is so t(h)rilling, it doesn't matter what musical genre its singing.

Take Jerry Hadley. He's won three Grammys, is considered the leading American tenor of his generation and is the ``king of crossover,'' performing with symphony orchestras, recording show tunes and singing the leading role in Paul McCartney's ``Liverpool Oratorio.''

Hadley will sing classical music and spirituals in Roanoke College's Olin Theater Tuesday at 8 p.m. He'll be wearing a tux, but don't let that fool you. He's really a regular guy with a great voice.

Call 375-2333, weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m., for tickets.
