THINGS TO DO

Zoobilation!, Earth Day events Saturday

Unless we perfect space travel and find another hospitable planet, this is where we'll be staying, so let's say "thank you" once a year or so. The Zoobilation! for Conservation Festival happens Saturday and Sunday at Mill Mountain Zoo.

At the same time, the annual Earth Day Celebration is Saturday at Mill Mountain Park. Details are in Friday's Calendar of Events in the Friday Extra section.

Shuttle buses will take you up the mountain from Victory Stadium, unless you opt for the three-mile Walk for Greenways, starting at 10 a.m. at Victory Stadium. Call 343-4417 about the walk, 387-2782 or 343-3241 about the celebrations.

Local Colors brings the world to Roanoke

Roanoke's restaurants have definitely taken on a more international flavor in the last several years. And so has its population. Get a taste of more than 40 countries at the annual Local Colors celebration Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. on the City Market and inside Center in the Square.

The Local Colors parade, from Jefferson Street to Market Square, kicks off at 1 p.m. Music, entertainment, arts and crafts, storytelling, games, an international fashion show and more will take you around the world right in your own back yard. Call 342-5700 to learn more.

Women under the hood

``Cars are built and designed by men. They can't be that complicated.'' This quote comes from Pat Lazzaro, race car driver and mechanic. And that's Pat for Patricia, not Patrick.

Lazzaro travels the country, giving free car care clinics for the vehicle-intimidated. She'll offer her expertise Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Roanoke Firestone Tire and Service Center in front of Tanglewood Mall, Roanoke.

Open season at Valleypointe After Hours

Dance a little or a lot or not at all. Take the kids - or not. Valleypointe After Hours returns tonight with The Embers, opening a season of 20 consecutive Thursday concerts at The Valleypointe Corporate Center (Interstate 581 and Peters Creek Road).

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and music plays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $3; no charge for kids under 12. Series tickets are available. Proceeds benefit the Easter Seal Society of Virginia. Call 362-1656 or (800) 365-1656. And you can get home in time to watch ``Seinfeld'' and ``ER.''

Books by the boxful

It's hard to put a price on a good book, but the Friends of the Roanoke County Public Library are doing just that for the annual book sale at its Headquarters/419 Library on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., continuing till 5 p.m. Monday.

Monday is ``Box Day,'' with all remaining books sold for $1 a box. For more info, call 772-7507.
