Miss Virginia runner-up to talk to third-graders about value of reading.
Dublin Elementary School will be host to Virginia's literacy "town hall" meeting at 1:20 p.m. today with Rachael Snider, first runner-up in the 1996 Miss Virginia Pageant, as hostess.
She will talk with third-grade pupils from the school and the Pulaski County Public Library's "Reading Is Fundamental" program about the role reading plays in their lives. The pupils will be asked about their reading habits.
Answers collected here and in the other 49 similar sessions in the other states will be compiled into a national report for presentation to President Clinton next week. Findings will also be made available to other educational and literacy organizations.
The meetings in each state were inspired by Clinton's "America Reads" challenge to the public to safeguard the nation's future by making sure every child knows how to read by the end of the third grade.
