John Walters and Howard Board of Roanoke teamed up to take over second position in the doubles event of the Virginia State Bowling Association men's state tournament after two weeks of competition.
Walters and Board totaled 1,456 in the handicap division and trail the Henry County team of William Rhyne and Jimmy Hale by 71 pins. Board is also 10th in the handicap division's singles event with a total of 752 and third in the handicap all-events category (2,195). He rolled a 685 scratch to lead all bowlers in the singles events.
Roanoke's Jeffrey Bower continues to lead the handicap division in the singles event (608) and all events (2,211) categories. Mark Jones remains second (2,208) in all events.
Rutledge Paint & Body No. 1 of Roanoke dropped to second place in the handicap division's team event, three pins behind Unlawful out of Richmond (3,486). Three other Roanoke teams moved into the top 10 in the team standings: Franchise, seventh (3,396), The Rolling Express, eighth (3,392) and Pendleton Paint, 10th (3,373).
The tournament runs 10 consecutive weeks at Vinton Bowling Center and Lee Hi Lanes.

|--| Nancy Baar, Stacey Craighead and Courtney Pritchett of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics qualified for state competition at Level 5 with strong performances at the sectional tournament Sunday in Hampton.
In the 7-8 age division, Baar placed third all-around, winning the uneven bars and finishing second in floor exercise. Kelly Phillips was third on bars. In the 9-11 age group, Craighead was third on bars and Frances McCorkle was third all-around. In the 12-and-up division, Meagan Lewis was second all-around, placing first on floor and third on vault and bars. Pritchett was second on beam.
Roanoke's Dell Curry Stars boys 15-Under AAU basketball team advanced to the state tournament by winning the Western Regionals April 3-6 in Salem.
Brent Dalton hit a turnaround jumper with five seconds left in overtime to beat the Northwest Stars 62-61 in the regionals semifinals. In the championship game, the Stars defeated Council of Southwest Virginia 71-60.
The state tournament is April 25-27 in Lynchburg.
