VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ALL OVER THE VALLEY

The Council of Community Services is looking to fill volunteer positions with the following area agencies:

ROANOKE CITY LIBRARY: The library needs volunteers ages 14 and over to conduct special programs, shelve books, type, file, work with patrons and do other jobs. Volunteers should be able to alphabetize materials and arrange them numerically. Training and time commitments vary. The library also needs storytellers for their dial-a-story program. Volunteers must be 7 or older and must be able to read or tell a story or poem. One hour of training is required. Tour guides are also needed. Volunteers must be 14 or older and must have good communication skills. Two to three hours of training is required, and volunteers are called as needed. The library is handicapped accessible.

MILL MOUNTAIN ZOO: The zoo needs contact keepers and keepers' aides to assist with cleaning exhibits and answering questions. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and must be comfortable working with animals. A screening interview is required, and volunteers must commit to working one day a week for four to six hours. The zoo also needs tour guides and lecturers. Volunteers must be 18 or older and must be able to communicate with people of all ages. Volunteers can commit to one day a week or just special occasions.

TAP TRANSITIONAL LIVING CENTER: The center needs baby sitters to care for children while their parents are in sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Volunteers must be available from 6 to 7 p.m. on either day.

RICHFIELD NURSING CENTER: The nursing center needs a TLC coordinator to visit residents, play music tapes, help write letters, read to residents, play cards, etc. Volunteers should be 13 or older and complete one hour of training and commit to three- to four-hour shifts.

VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF TRANSPORTATION: The museum needs a special events volunteer to assist with the public as needed for two to three shifts during the display of some special exhibits. Volunteers should be 15 or older and enjoy working with the public, have good communication skills and patience. Training provided, and other opportunities are possible. The museum is handicapped accessible.

TRANQUILITY BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION: The foundation needs volunteers to do office work. Experience is preferred but not required. The foundation is handicapped accessible.

JOB CORPS: Mentors are needed to provide follow-up support services to Job Corps graduates who live in the Roanoke Valley. The hours are flexible, and the mentors would work with 10 to 20 men per year. Training is provided.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA: Tutors are needed to help adults improve their basic reading and writing skills. Training is provided.

TO THE RESCUE MUSEUM: Museum attendants are needed to greet visitors and assist with the gift shop and displays. Volunteers must be 15 or older unless accompanied by an adult and must commit to at least four hours per month. The museum is at Tanglewood Mall.
