Herbal healer to speak April 24

Jacob McKinney, a lecturer on the use of herbal medicine, will speak at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood on April 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Topics to be discussed include: "Can Ma Huang be used safely for weight loss?" and "Can tonic herbs really help you maintain balanced health and feel great?"

La Leche League state conference

La Leche League of Virginia, which supports mothers interested in breast-feeding, will hold its state conference at the Patrick Henry Hotel in Roanoke on Saturday. Tine Thevenin, author of "The Family Bed", will talk on gender differences in parenting. Janet Jendron, a member of La Leche's League's international board will speak on global health issues.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the session begins at 8:30 a.m. The program costs $55. For more information call (540) 982-1674.

Author to present library programs

Author Carolyn Reeder will present programs as part of Bedford Public Library System's celebration of National Library Week. She will be at the Big Island Library on April 28 at 1 p.m. Reeder will also give a presentation on the people and legacy of the area now covered by the Shenandoah National Park today at 10 a.m. at the Bedford Central Library.

Bedford library friends' book sale

The Friends of the Bedford Public Library request donations for a Spring Book Sale to be held on May 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bedford Central Library. Fiction, children's books, craft and cookbooks along with cassettes, videos, CDs and puzzles are needed. To make contributions or for more information, call 586-8911 or Alice Nuzzo, 586-3075. All proceeds will benefit the Bedford Central Library.

Groundbreaking for handicapped

Groundbreaking for the Rosalind Hills community playground - "Everyone's Place to Play" - will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Langdon and Brandon Avenues in Southwest Roanoke.

The event will include free food, a police cruiser, mounted horses, a fire engine, smoke house, the American Red Cross Clown Corps, face painting, animal balloons, games, Dave's Bounce World and Spirit FM 90.3 radio station. Roanoke Mayor David Bowers and Miss Roanoke Valley Andrea Marshall will also be on hand.
