Salem gets more solid pitching, but the hitting still is lacking in its 10th loss in 14 games.
To figure out why the Salem Avalanche fell for the second straight day, it only took one look at the top four hitters in the lineup.
Beside their names, this epitaph could be written: O-for-16.
The teams combined for eight hits as the Avalanche lost 2-0 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks in a Carolina League baseball game.
Wilmington starter Kevin Hodges threw 83 pitches in eight innings. Salem (4-10) didn't test him, as it spread four hits between David Feuerstein, Brett Elam and Elvis Pena
The Blue Rocks (8-6) couldn't rely on their hitting to score runs, either. They scored twice in the first inning after Avalanche starter Mike Vavrek retired the first two batters. The final third of the inning included three wild pitches, one passed ball, one hit and Wilmington's two runs.
They are the first runs Vavrek has allowed this season. He's allowed two runs in 18 innings, yet has an 0-1 record to show for it.
