HOST HOKIES FAVORITES IN A-10 TENNIS

The Virginia Tech men's and women's teams each will be gunning for their second consecutive league title when the Atlantic 10 Conference tennis championships start today in Blacksburg.

The Tech men's team, ranked 21st in the nation at 16-3, is led by senior All-America Oliver Mayo and sophomore Aaron Marchetti. Mayo, of Australia, has won 22 of 30 matches. Marchetti is 23-6.

The Tech women's club, ranked 34th in the country at 18-2, is led by sophomore Majka Serafini of Italy and freshman Sabrina Pardo of France. Serafini has won 22 of 31 matches, while Pardo is 14-2.

LACROSSE

Maroons rout Shenandoah

The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to six games with a 15-2 drubbing of Shenandoah (3-8) in Salem. Senior Jeff Jones led the Maroons (9-2) with four goals. Jones ran his career points total to 178, currently sixth on Roanoke's all-time list.

SOFTBALL

Tech sweeps Campbell

Freshman shortstop Michelle Meadows' RBI single lifted Tech to an 8-7 victory over Campbell and gave the Hokies a sweep of a doubleheader in Blacksburg. The Hokies (21-26) took the opener 4-3 as Allison Weist beat the Camels (27-28) on a seven-hitter.

Roanoke splits: Marcee Hufton (William Byrd) was 2-for-3, scored twice and was the winning pitcher as Roanoke won the second game of a doubleheader with Ferrum 9-7. In the first game, Megan Viscanti had a three-run triple for the Maroons (9-21), but Ferrum scored seven runs in the fourth inning to win 8-3.

BASEBALL

Hokies rally to win

Kevin Kurilla and Chad Foutz (Franklin County) each had three hits as Virginia Tech rebounded from a six-run deficit to win 11-9 at Richmond. Tech is 21-22, while Richmond fell to 24-17.

Washington and Lee loses: Jimmy Pollard had four hits and Chad Charles drove in four runs to spark visiting Eastern Mennonite to a 16-12 victory over Washington and Lee in an ODAC game. Tucker Bixby led W&L (8-13, 3-5) with a 4-for-5 game. EMU is 13-15, 5-9.

HIGH SCHOOLS

All-stars chosen

Roanoke Valley Christian sophomore guard Brad Hutchins and Carlisle senior guard Marty Stanley were named to the Virginia Independent School All-State Division II basketball team.

Junior Terron Reed of Roanoke Catholic made honorable mention on the Division II team, while North Cross senior Jeff Baetz garnered similar recognition in Division I.

FCS postpones opener

Franklin County Speedway has postponed its season opener scheduled for this Saturday to Saturday, Apr.26, due to cold weather.
