Hotel Roanoke, Victorian Inn awarded 4 diamonds

Two area lodging facilities - the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center and The Oaks Victorian Inn, a Christiansburg bed and breakfast - have been given the American Automobile Association of Virginia's next-to-highest rating: four diamonds - out of a possible five - cq. Both had the same rating last year.

7 business bankruptcies filed|

Seven bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke. Two of them are personal bankruptcies that the court listed as businesses because they have commercial connections and could be of interest to business creditors and customers.

Southwest Virginia Recycling Inc. of Dryden in Lee County filed for liquidation with assets of $6,650 and liabilities of $167,336.

Four Seasons Cards & Gifts Inc. of Radford Shopping Plaza in Radford filed for liquidation. The company had no assets and liabilities of $36,042.

Brandon D. Quesenberry and Stephanie T. Quesenberry of Pulaski filed for liquidation with assets of $36,475 and liabilities of $64,495. They operate Two Thumbs Up Video, a video and tape rental business, at Hillsville.

James Claude Walker of Hillsville, owner of J.C.W. Enterprise and Walker Construction, filed for a wage-earner plan for repayment of debts with assets of $1,475 and liabilities of $2,000.

Jeff Brown and Cheryl Brown of Cedar Bluff, owners of an insurance agency, filed for liquidation with assets of $41,510 and liabilities of $114,625.

Betty I. Whitt of Blue Ridge, a provider of adult foster care, filed a wage-earner plan for repayment of debts. She had assets of $151,910 and liabilities of $176,064.

Fred H. Balthazr of Abingdon, who said he was self-employed but did not specify an occupation, filed for liquidation with assets of $27,100 and liabilities of $51,297.

Self-service storage facility opens in Botetourt County

Botetourt County's first full-service self-storage facility, Botetourt Self Storage, has opened at 4060 Cloversale Road, Alternate U.S. 220.

The building was constructed by Wiley Construction Co. of Salem. Jack and Carolyn White are the on-site managers.

The owners also sell locks, boxes, moving supplies and storage insurance. Dollies and carts are provided without charge.

Commonwealth to certify farmers' scales next week

The Virginia Office of Product and Industry Standards - formerly the Office of Weights and Measures - next week will conduct its annual certification of farmers' scales. Certification is required by state law for anyone planning to sell at the Roanoke, Salem or Vinton farmers markets, and for vendors selling from trucks or homes in Roanoke or Salem, or in Craig, Botetourt or Floyd counties.

Free testing will be held at the Roanoke farmers market 8 a.m. to noon Thursday , and 1 to 5 p.m. Friday. At the Salem farmers market, testing will be 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon Friday .
