FOREST BLAZE BURNS 20 ACRES

The fire near New Castle should be contained by midday today.

Gusty winds Friday fanned a late afternoon forest fire in Craig County that burned 20 acres in the Newcastle Ranger District.

Approximately 20 George Washington and Jefferson National Forest firefighters battled the ground blaze on Potts Mountain about eight miles northwest of New Castle in the Johns Creek Road area two miles off Virginia 311. Crews had cleared a fireline by 7:30 p.m. but the fire is not expected to be fully contained until midday today, U.S. Forest Service Fire Information Officer Dave Olsen said.

No structures are threatened by the fire and no one has been injured. Investigators have been to the scene but a cause had not been determined Friday night, Olsen said.

A 14 person fire crew worked through the night Friday to widen the fire line and put out any hot spots near the containment line.
