His car collided head-on with a truck on Virginia 613. The other driver was not badly hurt.
A Galax man was killed Friday in a two-car, head-on accident in Grayson County.
Brandi Shane Hawks, 20, was traveling east on Virginia 613 eight miles south of Galax about 4:50 p.m. when he rounded a curve and completely crossed the double yellow line into the oncoming lane, Virginia State Police Trooper J.C. Harmon said. Hawks' car collided with a truck driven by Roger Lee Wood, 35, of Sparta N.C., who was traveling westbound.
Hawks probably died instantly, Harmon said. It took the Galax Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department about an hour to extract him from the wreckage of the Volkswagen Beetle he was driving.
Wood suffered only a minor hand injury.
Harmon's investigation determined that Hawks, who was driving on a suspended license, was speeding at the time of the accident and alcohol was involved. Harmon based his conclusion on a strong smell of alcohol in the wreckage and on a conversation he had with friends of Hawks' who had been with him earlier in the day, he said.
