JMU hires Childers
Bud Childers, women's basketball coach at Louisville for the past eight seasons has been named coach at James Madison.
Childers compiled a 152-88 record with the Cardinals, including a school-record 25 wins during the 1994-95 season. The 1996-97 team finished 20-9, losing to Auburn 68-65 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
At James Madison, Childers succeeds Shelia Moorman, who resigned after 15 seasons to take a position in athletics administration at the school.

Martelli gets new contract
St. Joseph's University rewarded head basketball coach Phil Martelli with a new four-year contract after he led the Hawks to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen last month.
Martelli, 41, has compiled a 45-20 record in his two seasons at the Philadelphia school.
The Hawks posted a 26-7 record this season, winning the Atlantic-10 regular season and conference tournament titles.
New nickname: Miami University decided on its new nickname as the Redskins are becoming the RedHawks.
The university had used Redskins as a nickname for 68 years. But last year, the Miami Indian tribe of Oklahoma withdrew its support and asked the school to drop the name because some perceived it to be a racial slur.
