MAROONS WIN 13TH STRAIGHT ODAC TITLE

Senior J.D. Gattie scored a pair of late goals, and Roanoke College withstood a furious Hampden-Sydney rally to claim its 13th Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse title with a 9-7 victory over the Tigers in Salem on Saturday.

The Maroons (10-2 overall, 6-0 conference), ranked third in NCAA Division III, bolted to a 7-0 lead. They kept 17th-ranked Hampden-Sydney off the scoreboard until 15 seconds remained in the first half.

The Tigers (8-6, 4-1) scored the first six goals of the second half to tie the score with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Gattie, who had three goals on the day, put Roanoke up for good with 6:34 to play.

In other lacrosse in the region:

Roanoke women: Senior Kara Hedges scored five goals to lead the Maroons to a 12-8 victory over Washington and Lee at Alumni Field as the Maroons clinched the top seed in the ODAC tournament.

Lisa Franzino added four goals and an assist for Roanoke (10-2, 7-0), ranked eighth in Division III. Whitney Parker led the sixth-ranked Generals with three goals, and goalie Brooke Glenn had 17 saves for W&L (11-3, 5-2).

Washington and Lee: St. Mary's midfielder Rob Carr scored with 1:44 left as the Seahawks (5-7) rallied from a two-goal deficit to upset the seventh-ranked Generals 9-8 in St.Mary's City, Md.

Colin Dougherty, Shane McLaughlin and Tom Fallace each scored two goals for W&L (9-2).

ACC women's tournament: Fourth-ranked Virginia upended third-ranked North Carolina 9-6 in a semifinal of the inaugural ACC women's tournament in Charlottesville.

The third-seeded Cavaliers (12-3) will play top-ranked Maryland, a 14-4 winner over Duke, in the final at 12:30 p.m. today.

BASEBALL

Hokies sweep Flyers

Virginia Tech's John Hand pitched a four-hitter in the first game and first baseman Ryan Brittle (Radford) hit a three-run homer in the second as the Hokies swept Dayton in an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader at English Field.

Tech (23-22, 9-5) won the first game 3-2 as Hand (3-7) went the distance. Kevin Kurilla and Matt Griswold hit home runs for the Hokies.

The Flyers (13-21, 6-5) took an early lead in the second game, but Brittle's home run keyed a six-run second inning as Tech took the nightcap 9-4. Brittle was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) was 3-for-3 with two doubles.

Radford: A pair of seven-run explosions propelled the Highlanders to a Big South Conference sweep of North Carolina-Asheville in a doubleheader in Asheville, N.C. Radford took the first game 16-8 and won the nightcap 10-4.

In the first game, Mike Lombardi, Kelly Dampeer (Northside) and Chris Carr (William Byrd) homered for the Highlanders, who scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Carr and Lombardi each had three hits.

Radford (22-21, 8-6) trailed 3-1 before scoring seven runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap, when the Highlanders' Jim Thomas hit a two-run homer.

VMI: Furman swept the Keydets 6-4 and 7-6 in a Southern Conference doubleheader in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins came from behind to win the first game as David Noyce pitched eight innings to pick up the victory. VMI's Jay Adams took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings.

In the second game, Furman scored five runs in the second inning on five Keydets errors. VMI's Nate Shepperson hit a solo home run.

Washington and Lee: The Generals held on to win one game and fell apart in the other as W&L and Randolph-Macon split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader in Ashland.

Christian Batcheller (Patrick County) rescued the Generals (9-14, 4-6) in the first game with a two-out diving catch in the bottom of the last inning to preserve a 9-8 victory. The Yellow Jackets scored five runs and had the bases loaded when Batcheller made his game-saving play.

In the second game, Randolph-Macon (13-12, 8-5) trailed 2-1 before scoring six runs in the sixth inning to pick up a 7-3 victory.

TRACK AND FIELD

VMI wins Southern crown

VMI captured the men's title and Western Carolina won the women's crown at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Boone, N.C.

The Keydets compiled 132.33 points to easily outdistance the field. VMI's Darrius Jackson won the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200 behind teammate James Yarborough. The Keydets' Mike Bozeman was named coach of the year.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies competed in the Gamecock Invitational, with the Tech men defeating Wofford 121-12 and South Carolina 93-68.

Michelle Smith qualified for the NCAA provisional and broke the Hokies' school record in the hammer throw with a heave of 47.70 in women's competition with no team scoring.

Roanoke: The Maroons' Shelli Stevens finished third in the 100 hurdle (15.91 seconds) and second in the 400 hurdles (1 minute, 9.57 seconds), and Amy Beck set a school mark in the discus (122 feet, 10 inches) at the Royal Track Classic in Harrisonburg.

Tech in A-10 tennis finals

The Virginia Tech men's and women's tennis teams advanced to the finals of the Atlantic 10 Championships in Blacksburg.

The Tech men, who downed Dayton 4-0 and Massachusetts 6-1, face Temple in the final. The Hokies women, who breezed past Duquesne 4-0 and Xavier 7-0, meet George Washington.

Dixie softball tournament: North Carolina Wesleyan made three first-inning runs hold up as the Bishops defeated Ferrum 3-1 in the first round of the Dixie Conference tournament in Danville. The Panthers came back later in the day to post a 10-2 victory over Shenandoah in the losers' bracket.
